John Deere 4200
I have a 4200 HST and it only works in C range. When I select A or B range it remains in neutral and goes nowhere. How hard is it to replace the shift forks and is there anything else I can try to get me running again in A range? When I talked to the dealership they said they would need to split the tractor and it would be at least 15 hours of work - not something I want to pay them for if I can do it myself or there is an easier fix. All the linkage on the outside is good and it shifts easily. I am fairly good as a mechanic i.e. I have replaced a timing belt and turbo and various other car parts but I have not worked on any transmissions.

Thanks for your help!

Get a workshop manual if you are going to do any work on your machine. Splitting a tractor is a lot more than a timing belt. You have a couple thousand lbs parts to properly support while you pull them apart.

Most things clutch related & a lot of transmission stuff requires splitting on most tractors.

Look up some threads on here about splitting tractors. Usually complicated and requires a fair amount of dedicated space.

You may be in luck. Sort of.

The range shifter rods commonly break, and I suspect yours has broken while you are in
the high range. It CAN be replaced without splitting the tractor, but you will have to
remove the 3-pt cylinder housing on top. I have it documented somewhere on TBN.

Did you ever find what was causing no A or B range? What was the fix?
