Buying Advice 40 hp-- which brand?

   / 40 hp-- which brand? #11
You can't count on Deere and Kubota, or any company of any type, to be around for 30 more years. That's a LONG time. Many of us won't be around then. Who would have guessed 30 years ago that Sears would disappear? Possibly, the odds are higher with Deere and Kubota...maybe. In the global economy we have, who's to say that the Korean made parts of any tractor will be available in that time frame?

My local dealer told me that parts availability for Korean made New Holland tractors is on par with Korean made tractors in general, some available, some not. I'd still look for best value and what you think will be strong for the next 10 years. I have not bought mine yet, but have pretty much decided on a Kioti at the end of the year. When/if my (future) tractor is 15 years old and needs some major repairs, maybe it will just be time for a new tractor...

Case and Deere of this size are made in Korea. No fascination required for the imports - you just don't have a choice if you want a CUT.

The past seldom predicts the future.
However, Deere was founded in 1837 and Kubota in 1890. Pretty good records for longevity.

The next big test will be implementing battery power in compact tractors to avoid predictable Tier V emission controls on all tractors, not just those with over 19 kW engine power output.

I have 40 wooded acres.

I need a tractor I can work on and repair myself.

I want open station, hst, 4x4, will have backhoe, loader lift 2,000 pounds or more.

I have very heavy/rocky soil. Chores will include- fire wood, move logs to staging area, plow snow, build roads/trails, food plots, misc. landscaping.

Any new tractor that you buy will be computer controlled with Teir IV emissions equipment unless you stay under 25hp. New tractors are not as easy to fix as a 1952 Ford 8N but they’re far more reliable and capable.

Korean tractors (TYM, Kioti, Branson, LS) tend to be robust and less expensive. The Japanese tractors (Kubota, Yanmar, Iseki) tend to be refined and a little more expensive.

Your spec for minimum one ton FEL lift skews choices available to heaviest tractors with HST.

If you can make do with 1,100 to 1,300 pounds FEL lift capacity you can avoid spending considerable money and have a tractor that will fit in a garage.

If you move logs with pallet forks mounted on the Three Point Hitch, rather than the FEL, you will not need as heavy nor as expensive tractor. Kubota L2501 Three Point Hitch lift capacity is 1,918 pounds at lift points, 1,389 pounds 24" behind lift points. (Including weight of pallet forks.) Carrying a ton is much safer with cargo weight on the heavy rear axle and large rear tires.

Every tractor brand includes a model in the 2,600 pound to 2,900 pound (bare tractor) range with 100 cubic inch/24 horsepower engine ample for your applications. Tractors under 19 KW ( 19 KW = 25.4794-horsepower) are currently exempt from stringent, Tier IV emission controls which abruptly increase a tractor's cost some $2,000 above the 19 KW power demarcation.

Just curious, how easy/difficult is it to get parts for a 30 year old Kubota?

Jeffy was too busy in Wikipedia to notice, but Geotech, are you positive a deere model exists that is/was korean made? Small Case is same as NH/ LS so that is understood. But the deere?

Allis Chalmers - Founded 1901 - didn't make it. Even for Deere and Kubota I think I'd go with who the heck knows in 30 years. As Yoda said, “Difficult to see. Always in motion is the future”.

Jeff, here is a forum thread from you back in 2015:

Defunct Tractor Manufacturers

I blundered across this list of defunct tractor manufactures on Wikipedia.

Tough business.

List of former tractor manufacturers
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a list of companies that formerly manufactured or sold tractors. Some have discontinued manufacturing, were bought out or merged with other companies, or their names may have changed.

   / 40 hp-- which brand? #17
Just curious, how easy/difficult is it to get parts for a 30 year old Kubota?

Deere and Kubota are legendary for tractor parts availability back thirty years, Deere for longer.

However, parts for thirty year old tractors are low volume and are often astoundingly expensive relative to the original acquisition cost of thirty year old tractors.

Actually I am not sure where Deere assembles their small tractors. They have yanmar engines, so they are not "made in the US". Not that it bothers me.

RNGRR,
Be it not for you tube, Wikipedia, or tractor data, at least one poster would be devoid of any ability to comment, and no it is not you of course. His stuff is tedious and boring, oblivious that we All have search engines.

There was a post yesterday, in which your kubota pricing research was helpful. I copied the data from your purchasing post, properly credited the original author. OP was weighing the difference between a new L6060 and a slightly used version. CAB Model.

Did you notice that Viperdriver posted some tractor photos?

Certainly the OP won't object to a minor deviation, afterall Viper did purchase a 40 hp machine.

Jeffy, deere actually obfuscates w/ regard to "country of origin" data for some models. Doubt the advent of battery charged tractors is on the horizon, althogh I hope you are the first beta recipient.
