3016 HST. Enough HP?

. My wife was thinking of getting a sickle mower down the road. Some are manual, but lots are hydraulic. Should I get the rear remote, or just get a manual mower?

I'd want at least one set of hydraulic remotes on the rear unless it was an addition to the 2 or 3 other tractors I already had and was going to have a mower or similar hanging on the back full time.

Go with the forks you will be surprised at how handy they are. I use mine all the time. Definitely get rear remotes at least one set, more if you can. I use 1 set for a hydraulic top link in conjunction with a 3 point quick hitch and I can change attachments in seconds with out leaving tractor seat.

I have three sets of rear remotes and I use them all when I have my commercial box scraper mounted.

Wow, the dealer just quote almost $1400 to have the rear remote installed. If I buy just the kit (~$850), is it something an average mechanic can install?

Depends on how that average mechanic feels about taking apart a brand new tractor.

To go from no rear remotes to a single set of factory rear remotes, that is not uncommon pricing either way.

I actually haven't seen any OEM remotes installed on a 3016. Is it pretty intrusive, or just bolt-on?

I think they were mainly only included on models that shipped with backhoes on the 3016.

They're bolt-on, but much needs removed to access and plumb everything. On most units, the seat, operator platform, and floorboard comes out; and on some the fender comes off too.

To plumb them you disconnect the 3 point hydraulic feed from either the pump, or if equipped, the front loader valve. The line that went to the 3 point you'll connect to the new spool (which is the control valve for the rear remotes), and from the new spool you reconnect the 3 point with another line they provide.

You'll mount the new spool under the right side of the seat and the control handle will stick up through the operator platform beside the seat, and there will be lines that go to the rear of the tractor where the remote ports mount.

I see. Is there a reduction of flow to the FEL with the new spool inline? This option is starting to sound less desirable!

Same amount of flow. Just a new path the flow can be diverted through to do other things on the other end of the tractor.

I have had a 3616 HST for a year now and it has done everything I have been able to throw at it without a single problem. BUT, many times I wished I had opted for the rear hydraulics when I bought it.

On that size tractor id find more use out of a third function rather than rear remotes... the only thing I could see worth using on rear remotes would be a log splitter or trencher.. maybe a small wheel rake. Now a grapple with a third function... that's were its at

no... it will not be a fun job if you have never done one

The 3016HST will do as well as a 3616HST in many conditions, like loader work and backhoe work. But dragging a log up a hill with an HST is something that will show you that the 3016 could use a few more HP, especially with loaded tires (which I recommend). I'd consider more HP for your application. Generally a 3616HST is $2500-$2700 more than the 3016HST. If it is $4000 more, consider the new 1533HST instead as it will be nearly the same price and is a heavier tractor with a large displacement 4-cylinder with a ton of torque.

To the OP, putting a remote on takes some time, but it's not rocket science. If you like to tinker, do it yourself. That is assuming you like to turn wrenches.

I agree here. When i tried out a 3016 hst, it had trouble going up a 45* hill unencumbered. Had to put it in low and then while the engine was screaming, it went up the hill. The 3016 shuttle went up the hill with just about idle rpms and at the same speed. Don't know if something was wrong with that particular 3016hst but I bought the shuttle. Then a couple days later and before delivery, the dealership called to ask if they could use my tractor to rototill a new garden area as all they had left were hst's.
My 3016 gear has done some heavy duty work. It can bring out an entire 25" 60' tall pine tree in one shot.

I recall the first time I had to split a tractor and I am no neophyte when it comes to wrenching. I'd consider a remote install as going to a prom in comparison to the tractor split.

The rear remote can be installed by removing the seat and the plastic cover panel on the inside of the fender. Not that big of a deal. If your dealer is willing to sell it to you for $850, get it, that is a deal. This valve also has the float function with it, it is a good clean setup. If you think that you will ever need more than one remote, then forget about it and just go aftermarket. Mahindra only offers a single rear remote option for their 16 series tractors. Morons :sigh:

People always seem to say that the lower HP models will do the same work as the higher HP models and for the most part they are right. What the main difference is, is the speed that the job can be done with the higher HP model. This applies to most all types of work, not just PTO work. Example, your pulling a loaded box blade up hill. 30 HP tractor is struggling but not breaking traction and getting the job done. The 36 HP tractor does the same, except does not struggle and can actually move along at a faster rate. So moving the same amount of material, just faster.

Just my :2cents:, I'm sure that you will be happy with either machine. :thumbsup:

Unfortunately, I signed the contract on the 3016 before the last set of replies. I just couldn't swing the extra $4500 for the 3616 ($4k plus freight), or the $5500 for the 1533. Hopefully I won't be too disappointed.

I bought a 5' Mahindra (Kodiak) tiller, SS forks, 5' rotary cutter, and Rim guard ballast. It has a grill guard standard as well as R4 tires.

Based on all your responses, I will call the dealer in the morning and have him order me the rear remote kit. I may have him install it only so it is covered under mfg warranty. My wife found a hydraulic-lift sickle mower she wants.
