But as a property owner handling logs only for myself and using a winch for topping and felling, I'm in for making my own and I thing the homemade capstan winch for $400 or so and some time and thought is really a pretty good option.

Oh I agree 100%, it's dealing with the big 100'+ pile of loose rope (that a winch store's & dispenses) that pried my wallet open buy a winch when I built mine. But I'd still like to build a capstan/PTO winch and am keeping an 'eye' out for the right parts.

You just put down a 5 gallon bucket and feed the rope into it as you pull. It drops right in and won't tangle. It feeds right out and won't tangle either. I learned this concept with rescue throw bags many years ago. You just stuff the rope in the bag. When you throw it, it feeds right out.

Dead on. I do the same thing with several 100' extension cords I use regularly. Put a weight in the bottom of the bucket to keep it from tipping over when it feeds and keep the two ends out of the bucket and everything stays nice and tidy and knot free. The navy and commercial fishing operations always train in line handling and coiling - just remember to lay your line in consistent with the rope's twist - there are left hand and right hand twist rope and you should never coil against the twist.

Do a new Thread for that one - assuming we're talking about the "wheelchair trailer mover thingy". Love to see that too as I happen to have a nice motorize chair not being used. They can be had "pretty cheap" too.

Sorry only one I have is the finished project.
Note reversed handle bar, (easy mod), the framework was cut and shortened.
The lifting is a 12 volt electric screw jack that I had.
The lift arm is shaped downwards to slip under the trailer hitch.
Yet to come is some weight ballast that will be in a metal box below the steering post.
I calculated we will need about 125-150 lbs.

On the fun side, none of the electrics were modified so the 'mover' has lights, horn flasher etc. So it is 'night time rated'. LOL.

The hand in the pix is on the 'up/down' switch that controls the arm.

This mover is for my friends storage facility that offers free trailers for his clients to move in. He also rents as well so some days they move trailers a dozen times or so.
When we install the weight box it will also serve for parts and tool storage.

Was a real fun project, and it handles really well.

Instead of a weight box on back, put a stand on like a walk behind mower, that way you can ride on it and be the counter weight
