I bought a 2 row jd71 last year for $800 then paid $240 for shipping from North Dakota to Indiana.
It was one that was made from a multiple row. Check out freightquote.com. The
Price was the seller put it on a skid and dropped it off at the terminal and I picked it up

Got to agree auctions are the place to get bargains. I prefer farm auctions, or community auctions. You know items are most generally local. Being at the right place, at the right time, is the biggest help. Even if a dealer is bidding against you, they are looking to make a minimum of 20% profit, to make it worth their while. On the other hand, I've seen some items fairly new sell for more than you can buy new for. This being tools, etc.

The main thing is to get a price set in your head, and allow a little leaway according to condition, and stick to it. Don't get caught up in it all like a buddy of mine. He seems to get mesmerized sometimes, and just can't quit bidding.

On the other hand, I did a quick CL search just now, and saw this: ALLIS CHALMER 3 PT TWO ROW PLANTER Not all that familiar with AC planters, other than the older mounted one my buddy has for his CA Allis. It seems to do a great job planting his sweet corn. This one looks to have a very heavy hitch & adjustable tool bar, and in decent shape.

I agree with you on that one too. I bought a new 2 basket tedder from Ken about 10-11 years go. Got it, and shipped to my door for right at $200.00 less than than a local dealer wanted for a 1 year old one, that had been over about 300 acres of hay.

They have gotten very pricey for sure. I have a 2 row JD 71 that I am going to sell. It is in good working condition, but I recently sold off the part of my acreage that is tillable so I don't need it anymore. I bought it 3 or 4 years ago and only planted a few acres of food plots with it. I am in Tennessee so I doubt you would want to drive that far to pick one up. PM me if you want any further info.

The Allis Chalmers is a good planter but seed plates are limited. The easy answer is to buy a seed plate adaptor (Lincoln Ag Products). It allows you to use either JD or IH seedplates but I forget which.

The A/C planter shown above is not unreasonable at $500. Very often, auction prices on A/C planters can be on the low side and you then see them for sale elsewhere with a marked up price. This one looks to be farmer owned and probably the price is negotiable. It looks to be in good shape. One drawback is it might be CAT II but if it is you could cut that frame it half and weld back together on CAT I specs. It's easy to do.

There are many used IH unit planters around and the price is often reasonable. This type would clamp to a toolbar so you just figure out a way to do it. It's easy so ask if you need more. I've seen these go for $100 each.

EDIT--if you wanted to buy from a dealer I would second the mention here of Ken Sweet. I've never heard a complaint and he seems to be very accommodative.

My 5740 is Cat 2, so I can use either cat 1 or 2. I'm not mechanically inclined, so I'll need one that works out of the box. All these rusty ones make me nervous!
