2544 dieseling

My 2544, now with 13 hours on the clock, diesels when I shut it off. It's done it pretty much since new. I'm sure it doesn't hurt anything, but it sure sounds bad. You would think it's some old 1974 Dodge Dart or something...

I usually let it idle down for a few seconds then turn it off. It is worse if it's shut off just after disengaging the blades, due to the engine being hotter.

Any tricks to get it to shut off smoothly? Let it run at high idle before shutting down? Low idle longer? Premium gas?

Other than that, it runs like the proverbial Swiss watch. It's really a treat to mow with. It eats through thick tall grass like it wasn't there and discharges it so far it just blends in with no clumps. Just like my trusty 2-cycle Lawn Boy Gold model.

Chris, you have to do exactly what the 2544 manual says. Stop the engine at part to full throttle. I know it doen't 'feel' right, but that's how it is with most electric fuel cutoff solenoid equipped engines. My 2544 will after-run or BANG on an idled s/d almost every time. I've finally gotten used to the throttle up s/d!

Thanks, Joel. I'll try that next time I mow. Yes, it does feel wierd shutting down with the engine roaring along, but I suppose the engine really doesn't know the difference. And with the fuel cutoff solenoid, you don't have to worry about a bunch of raw fuel going through the engine washing all the oil off the cylinders.

The engine really doesn't need to be roaring. Just idle down for 10 seconds or so, raise the throttle quickly to 1/2 throttle and turn it off immediately. I've been doing it that way on my last two Cub Cadets (1515 - Kohler single and 2180 Vtwin Vanguard).

It'll never backfire if you do that and it'll kill it quickly.
