Something like this?

Doing it all outside and underground would be ideal. I wasn't sure it was legal or safe.

I'm not sure that Home Depot box will work, you need 4 wires L1, L2 ,N ,G.

If you’re going the direct burial route, versus an accessible box, don’t cheap out on the splice kit. Get a brand name that contractor recommmeds.

And don’t forget where the buried splice is, in case you need to remember in 10 years.

I'd also disconnect the load wires at the breaker (leave the feed from the meter attached). God forbid someone closes it and the underground is live without being spliced to the new shop feed.

If you use a junction box all you need are insulated connectors. But im really confused about is the fact that the power for your future building is not supposed to run thru another building before terminating at a different building. Not sure if this will fly with new building?

This is something ive never dealt with before. The junction box would probably be about 12”x 12” to have enough room.

I would never use a terminal that is not insulated. Your working with 200 amps here. Instant death.

For future insurance, I would look for a name brand with an actual UL approval, and rated for burial. It's probably easiest to find at a local electric supply house. The most common name brand is Polaris, and the direct burial version is the Polaris Edge, by NSI.

The burial rated splices generally look a little different than Polaris style that @grsthegreat posted above;

Notice that you can seal any unused ports until you need them in the future.

I think that the point is well taken about the amount of power present in a line energized might be. Disconnect the wires at the breaker, pull the breaker, but I would do something to keep it safe.

All the best,

Peter

Thats an outdoor service disconnect. Hell probably need on outside the new shop when he builds it, but i wouldnt install one indoors.
Yes it's rated for outdoors, which means it exceeds any indoor requirements.

Thank you. This is why I posted this question on here!!!!

I'm looking on Amazon and only seeing dry location use. I'll keep looking. I don't need this anytime soon, but it's better to have what I need here so I can use it when I need it.

Do you put an underground splice like this in a junction box of some kind? Or do you just bury it and mark the location in case you have to come back and bury it again?
