Just bought a 2155 with 2500 hrs. Started it up to use for the first time today. Drove it 1/2 mile to get implement and temp gauge steadily went from cold to red. Shut it off and removed hood. It has coolant though it is a little low. No obvious signs of a leak. No spray or sign of over heating when I removed the cap. Where do I start?

Further examination Water in reservoir when running (temp gauge on the edge of red) is just above 98.6. I put my finger into the h2o and it was slightly warm. After shutting off the tractor the h2o increased in temp and was hot but not unbearable. I filled the reservoir to the top with distilled h2o before this to look for bubble that according to another thread would shoe head gasket/cracked head problems. Is the thermostat?

I assume the fan belt is tight? SOunds like coolant is not circulating. Could be broken fan belt, stuck thermostat or broken impeller on water pump.

My guess is a faulty temp sensor or dash ground if you can stick your finger in coolant after driving 1/2 mile. I'd suggest to do some checking of temp's with a laser thermometer.

My 2155 does the same thing. I tried a new sending unit and it did not fix it on mine. Someone has the wiring all cobbled up and I suspect that is the issue. I believe when I looked at mine I checked the ground and gauge it self and did not see any. One of these days I will get back to it and try to rewire some of it. On mine if I peck on the gauge or cut the light on or off typically the gauge goes down to about half way in the green.

I put a mechanical gauge on and it is reading 190 F. Do I need a new sender or gauge?

I would think the sender would fail before the gauge. I would start with a sender.
I am not sure if your gauge is the same as my 2030, but normal for it is just to left of straight up. It has about an 80 degree sweep cold to hot.
