Looking for some ideas as to what could be wrong with it. Dealer will have to pick up after the weekend, but in the meantime any help would be appreciated.

Has 220 hours on it, no trouble until today.

Started it up and in the 10 minutes of warm up at idle, the engine sounded just a little different. Almost like there was something extra running with a slightly higher pitch. Also it had slightly different smell.

Warmed up as usual and when I put it in gear and then moved the shift into Forward the extra sound went away but it made a sound like a truck's air brakes just for a second - it usually doesn't do this. I drove it out of the shed, and put it in Neutral and the same air brake sound. Normal temp on gauge.

I hopped off for a second, it then stalled out and a bunch of white smoke came out of the rear part of the engine compartment. When I opened the hood the smoke was gone, and I couldn't tell where it had come from.

Haven't tried to restart it. All fluids are at appropriate levels, all service up to date. Worked fine two days ago.

Any thoughts much appreciated.

This air brake sound, like the sound of air moving (like setting the park brake) or the sound of (some) slowing to a stop?
Not that I have any idea anyway, hope it's just a minor issue.

It sounded like air releasing under pressure, but just for a second.

Update: I found the following piece of rubber underneath the tractor. It's possible it's not from the tractor, but it has the same smell as the tractor was making. I'm guessing part of the diesel emissions crap maybe?

How often did the tractor regen on you? Did you canceled any of the regens? Did it completed all the regens?

It regenerates about every 15-20 hours. I have not skipped any. It always completes the regens with no problems. I have been expecting a regen the past couple of uses but it hasn't lit up. I am not saying it's overdue, but it could be.

I meant to add that I tried to start it. Nothing. Doesn't even try to turn over. The dash lights up but nothing else.

I was thinking that the DPF could be plugged up but since it's been doing the regens fine, shouldn't be the issue.

I was thinking the same thing. Could it plug up in one cycle?

Usually it takes some cancelled or non completed regens to get to that point.

I don't think it's a regen or DEF issue.

The pic you posted, how about holding the other end and take a pic exposing the end that you were holding.

Update:
1. ovrszd is correct - it was not a DEF issue. I apologize for not posting another photo. Somehow I missed your post. The piece was from the starter.
2. I called the dealer last Monday. He sent his mobile crew out. They identified the problem as the starter. Apparently there is a service bulletin out about the key switch sticking and burning out the starter.
3. It was under warranty, and they had the new starter and key switch installed on Friday. They ended up leaving the headlights on by accident and draining the battery, but once I figured that out and charged the battery the tractor is running perfectly again.
4. Thanks to everyone for their input on this.
