Tractor
in the process of buying
Hi Everyone,

I have narrowed my choice down to a 2015 HST with FEL and 2710 backhoe.
We don't have a lot of dealers around here and my local dealer seems to be (in my opinion) trying to pull a couple things I think are sort of shady (lots of add on's). I'm not sure if these are right or standard so I will ask you since everyone here seems to have a lot of experience in these issues. I wasn't born yesterday but I also haven't purchased a tractor in a long long time. Here is my situation and what the dealer is trying to sell me..

  • 1. 2015 tractor - $11,960.00
    2. ML-104 loader - $2769.00
    3. 2710 backhoe - $6,175.00
    4. Install loader - $200.00
    5. Install backhoe with mount kit - $723.00
    6. Rear tire loading (water/antifreeze) - $248.00
    7. Freight for tractor and loader - $357.00
    8. Freight for backhoe - $404.00
    9. 16 inch bucket (said BH does not come with bucket) - $390.00
    10. Freight on bucket - $25.00

    SubTotal - $23,250.00

    Mahindra discount - ($400.00)
Discount for stock machine - ($2,350.00)

    Total before taxes - $20,250.00

I am going to finance the unit so the $400.00 is not the cash in lieu they are offering. The unit is in stock, sitting there, so it isn't like I am going to have things shipped in from all parts of the country.

I've talked to a couple other dealers (not Mahindra) and when I asked about loading tires they all say they do it for nothing.. that is what started me thinking about all the adds and discounts from above.

This just doesn't sound right to me but I could be wrong in my thinking. I am in Arizona and Mahindra is in Texas.. not that far for shipping costs.

I talked to a Kubota dealer and I can buy a B7800 (30 hp) with loader and BH-75 backhoe for $23,250.00 with no add ons, no dealer freight, no water/anti add on.. etc. This is an out the door price less taxes.

All these add ons just don't seem right.. any thoughts and help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Chris

As a customer, the biggest question I would have here is why should I pay to have the attachments installed? If I were you, I'd tell the dealer to deliver the tractor with backhoe, and loader unattatched. I'd let him know I would be taking them off eventually, so I might as well be the one who installs them.

AchingBack.. I questioned the install costs as he had them listed and his explanation was that the install costs were for the brackets and subframe items he had to install to "then" put the loader and backhoe on the tractor. I'm thinking this is BS because from what I have seen most of them come with the loader already installed from the factory and his quote even says "freight for tractor and loader". I can't see any brackets anywhere that needed to be added for the FEL, they all seem to be welded on posts from the original build at the factory.

And then he has freight for the tractor and FEL at less than the freight for just the BH. I'm sure the tractor and FEL weigh a lot more than the 2710 backhoe.

I haven't been in one dealer (other brand tractors) where there were all these add on items so either they have their prices all jacked up (which it doesn't seem like) or this dealer is trying to pull a fast one.

I just bought a new 2816 with a loader, tires loaded with Rim Guard, a couple hooks installed on loader and delivered to my house an hour away for $15,100 without taxes.
It seems you're paying the same price for tractor/loader/tires as I did.
At times I just ask for the out the door price and not all broken down.
I don't need to know all the separate charges, just my final cost.

Go to the Mahindra website and check out the MSRPs.
2015 gear/hydro $10,660/$11960
ML 104 loader $2769
2710 Backhoe $6175
Farm tractors for Ag Farmers, Hobby Farmers - Sub Compact, Compact & Full Size 2WD & 4WD Utility Tractors
Farm tractors for Ag Farmers, Hobby Farmers - Sub Compact, Compact & Full Size 2WD & 4WD Utility Tractors

I bet any dealer here would love to sell you one at MSRP and save you a wad of cash!
Precisely why it was a good move for Mahindra to re-list their MSRPs. Wonder how many people this dealer has sold a tractor to at these prices?

The prices that he has listed out may very well be what he needs to charge to stay in business. You have the choice to not pay his price and to look elsewhere. If that is the tractor that you want, check with other Mahindra dealers and what freight will cost. Then you will know what that tractor will cost to have. I too had to go shopping out of town when I bought my tractor. Local dealer just didn't work out for me either. Sometimes you need to just look at the bottom line though, and not worry about what all the little things are. If the total is what you can live with, then who cares what each nut and bolt costs.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I don't agree. This is the typical car dealer trick. He has added on a ton of extras and then discounts them so it looks like a real deal. Basically what he is then selling me the tractor for is full MSRP plus a few extra padded dollars while making it look like he is giving me a $3,000.00 discount. Like the old "paint protection spray" that always happens to be on the car you want and costs $1,500.00 plus more bogus add ons so no matter how much you dicker you still end up paying full sticker while they cry that they aren't making a penny on the deal.

I haven't seen or talked to one other tractor dealer (in my search for the right manufacturer) that has pulled this kind of garbage.. not a one.

I found a Kubota dealer within 400 miles of me that will sell a B7800, loader, backhoe and will deliver it for almost the same price as this dealer wants for the 2015. And, no sales tax to boot since it is an out of state deal. Kubota is looking very tempting.

If the dealer has to pad the prices this way to stay in business he won't be in business for very much longer anyway.

If you feel that this guy is playing tricks trying to get more $$$$, then move on to another dealer or brand. If you feel that the guy is shady and because of his pricing may not even be in business later on, then those are more reasons to not purchase from him. As some others have posted, you can get better prices elsewhere. My thinking is that you need to purchase from someone else and forget about this guy.

Hey, fill out your profile and maybe someone in your area can recommend a dealer for you.

Good luck

Chris,
Give a few other Mahindra dealers in your area a chance at the deal, and I think you may find some better pricing on the same machine.

Chris, did you get the quote when you visited his lot or did he just send you a qoute in an email?

Hi,

There is only one other dealer around here, 175 miles away. Seems like a real nice guy too but I called him 5 times and never got a price out of him. He keeps saying he is waiting for his sales rep to call him back.

I can't believe these guys. I know they aren't selling many tractors.

Hi Buck, I got a written quote from him when I visited his lot on the 3rd time. That's when I saw all these added charges.

I agree Chris, sounds like he isn't to interested. To bad, the 2015 has been one rock solid little tractor. Good luck tractor shopping.

Chris,
Having just gone through this experience, I can say I saw a lot of what you just got quoted... It took some time, but I found a dealer that was looking to make a fair and honest profit and not rake me over the coals. Your 'gut' feeling is serving you well.

I did not have to pay for all of the add-ons your dealer is trying to charge you and got a significant discount off of MSRP for my 2516HST. In fact, I could have added a backhoe to my package and would have been within $500 of your quoted price for a smaller tractor. I also got a nice woods finishing mower for that package price as well. Check out my post on first time buying experience for 2516HST.

Keep positive and keep talking to other dealers. They need to know you are serious and they will deal. Good luck!

I am curious to find out what you, the tractor consumer, would feel is a fair markup on a tractor. Cost + shipping + ? In other words, what is a fair profit for the dealer.

When I bought my 2615 HST, a little over 3 years ago, for some reason; it never entered my mind as to how much profit the dealer was making. Now had I been buying a new car, I may have thought differently.

I also looked at tractors as a different animal than a vehicle. I was investing in a piece of equipment I expected to last decades. And, it was kind of intimidating to think of what might go wrong, would I be able to handle being a tractor owner, etc.. I knew one thing - good dealer support was crucial.

Having been a business owner, I knew a lot about profit, and overhead. I realized my dealer had a great deal of overhead, and in order to stay in business, needed to make a profit to meet the monthly expenses when sales are slow.

In my opinion I paid a fair price for my tractor, $14,995.00 which was $200 less than the asking price, and I paid $150.00 for the calcium filled tires.

I know the salesman appreciated he not haggling over price, and he has shown his genuine friendliness over the years. It is a great family owned dealership with employees with families, and hungry mouths to feed.

Sometimes what is fair, is what each party to a sale is willing to accept. I think some dealers may have more overhead, and therefore try to charge a little extra when they feel the customer has a fatter wallet. That wasn't my experience though.

I asked a customer that once and got a real straight faced answer. "If you make more than me its way to much" when I asked him how much he made he said "nothin" I politely responded....Deere is just around the corner, can I print you a map?
