I have a 2 cycle lawnboy gold series (circa 1996) that has been causing me some headaches lately. I bought the mower new and no real problems until recently.

Mower starts fine, but then after run 10 minutes or so it will die. Will not start back up until the mower cools off. It started doing this last fall. It hasn't been that big of an issue, because I generally only use it to trim a few spots that its a little tricky to get my tractor into.

I originally thought it was the carb, so over the winter I rebuilt it. Thinking that would take care of the problem, I was somewhat surprised/disappointed that the exact same thing is happening this year. I certainly am no carberator expert, but it seems somewhat reasonable that if: I rebuilt the carb last year, the mower actually started this spring, and the exact same condition remains, maybe something else is wrong.

Other things to point out: gas is fresh, spark plug is new this year.

Based upon some reading I did on the internet, I'm thinking maybe the solid state ignition module is bad. I went ahead and picked up one on partstree.com yesterday for about $65.

Am I on the right track? Any other thoughts?

The carb float is original. If the float is going bad, would this produce the same symptoms?

Its a shame they stopped building the 2 cycles. They seem to be as close to indistructable as a mower could be.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

You are on the right track with the ignition. I don't know if the '96 version of the engine used an external condenser or if it's built in to the module, but that is the classic symptom of the ignition condenser being bad.

Unfortunately Lawn Boy's are just green painted something else's now, and the incredible two strokes are long gone. Refurbishing those mowers back in the mid 80's kept me from having to get a high school job at the burger joint :)

Sounds like you're on the right track with the ignition module. The Lawnboy I used for so many years was a 1970 or '71 model, so it had a condensor and points that I changed once. And yes, if they still make the old 2 cycle Lawnboys that's probably what I'd have now, but now they're just green Toros; good mowers, but not what they were 30 years ago.
