Since our front clutch pack is stronger than when we got it in 2010 I sure hope it does not get bad enough to require breaking apart being a back hoe. Ours works well when it is cold but after about an hour it starts having trouble locking up when in High Range.

Gail splitting the tractor in front of the trans is a piece of cake, If I had all of the seals when I split it, this would have been a 4hr job tops and the seals cost me about $20.

I thought I would have to drop the subframe of the loader and hoe.

I realize this is an old thread, but I joined these forums just so I could thank you. I have a 1979 John Deere 2640 w/reverser that I believe has the exact same problem. I'll be splitting it pretty soon, and feel like this thread will have saved me a LOT of head scratching.

Other stuff came up, so only recently got around to splitting this tractor. I had to enlarge the holes holding the loader brackets on (one to 1"-8), long story. That magnetic drill press is a wonderful tool! That's a 7/8" bit in it.
I stuck a splitting frame together that will bolt to two of the existing loader bolt holes to brackets, and uses scaffolding feet (already had plenty).
Clutch pack might come out this weekend.

Pulled both the main clutch, and the forward clutch pack out this afternoon. One seal in the clutch pack shredded, and no sign of the back one. Will try to get around to mic'ing plates this weekend.
Amazingly, no scoring anywhere. The old metal parts look brand new.

Good idea for the splitting stand. What size threads are the scaffold feet? They look pretty big.
