comparing descriptions from previous posts i believe it is a model 32 loader, and post 64 tractor from what you said about the steering pistons.

I bought a 1963 530 CK backhoe recently .Hydraulics seem to work well . I have replaced some hoses-not fun but not terrible. When I tried to service it,the hydraulic filter housing (right side in front of battery) was dry,not even a film of oil. This is a torque converter model.Tempted to just close it up and use it but I hate to go without a filter

Good to see that you found this thread. There is a wealth of 530 CK information here and some knowledgeable folks. Hopefully they will chime in. I've no idea on your filter problem but just wanted to post so as to follow along and maybe learn something.

Do you think that the filter was bypassed for some reason? I've never seen that before, but not too hard to do. Just odd....
Most filters are on the suction side of the hydraulic pump and some have an internal bypass to prevent starving the hydraulic pump. If you have a hydraulic chart for your machine & post it we could see if anyone has an idea.

Been hauling anhydrous for a few days. I appreciate your reply. Ill try to find a hydraulic chart. The thing is it works so well I never would have guessed there was a problem. Might just close it up,use it and keep thinking about.

Open this link, I think you'll find it quite handy. It is a service and parts manual for the 530 which includes tractor, backhoe and loader: Case 530CK - Manuals

To find parts use the OEM part number, if on a PC copy and paste the part number to Google, you'll be amazed what pops up. Do a separate search on ebay too.

I started the tractor today with the filter housing open and no filter.Raised the loader all the way up,no leaks. Going to close it up and forget about it for now. Thanks for the input

Just curious about your hydraulic filter. Is it like this one..?? : Torque Converter Drive, Hydraulic Pump And Adapter | CASE Construction | MyCNH US Store

Or like this one (page 22) :http://home.microtech.com/mikef/530...e_Parts/D908-Loader_Backhoe_Parts_pg21-40.pdf

If it's the first one, that is the tractor hydraulics. I'm assuming it has lift links for a 3 pt. hookup. If this is the case, the hydraulics are for that and likely the reservoir is dry and why there is no oil. The reservoir is in the torque tube and notorious for the seal leaking and letting oil out. PIA to replace because you have to split to replace, don't ask how I know.

If it's like the second one, could be someone bypassed the filter for some reason.

The loader/backhoe oil is contained and filtered in the loader. The torque converter is filtered up front. It has no separate hydraulics so I assume that filter housing is simply unused.
