I have had a problem with the trans oil leaking out of my '42 d4 dozer. It is coming out of a hole on the bottom of the trans and I don't know if that is a bell housing drain or if it is missing the plug. It only leaks a little at a time due to a sponge like material holding most of it in. If anyone knows if I need to plug that or if my main seal is shot and that's why its leaking, please give me your advise. Thanks.

I've been running my Dad's 1951 Allis Chalmers HD5 (about the size of a Cat D3) for a couple of months and it has pretty much the same problem. I suspect a seal is bad, but considering its age and that it still runs like a top, I just add 80-90 gear oil once a week and call it good. If I was relying on it in a business situation I would certainly have it fixed. For my occasional use a little spilled oil is nothing to worry about.

I did not answer your question, but I hope this helps.

That is almost exactly what I do, just add 80-90 every time I use it which is occasional. IT runs like a champ and does amazing! I love it and at some point will fix it. Thanx for the confidence that wat I'm doing isn't very bad.
