I took my loader off this morning, hooked up bushhog and get ready to take off AND no pto. Handle wouldn't budge. I actually bent it slightly, no movement. I got down and looked around while ciphering on the problem. Everything looked fine, hopped on, no pto. I finally figured something had to be hydraulically locked. Worked loader joystick and BAM! pto handle slipped right into gear. Now I THINK I know what happened, so could anybody explain in redneck terms to me why it happened. At least I got it going before I said an ugly word or 12.

Square gears. If the handle won't slip in smoothly, bump the button and then try it again.

How about trying to work the PTO shaft manually, then try to engage the lever? After that hit the button??

Would that work Jerry?? I would think its all a matter of the gears lining up...

On my 135 (which is a different tractor I know) when I push in the clutch and ThePOTO lever won't engage I don't pull harder , I let the clutch out a little to spin the shaft around then push it back in and then as the shaft is slowing I catch the spline/cogs :)

I don't think that it will. The non-alignment seems to be along the front of the shaft. The PTO shaft at the rear doesn't seem to make any difference. At least that is the way it has been with my last two compacts.
What you say does work with dual clutch tractors, but with independent PTO it doesn't or maybe I should say it hasn’t on mine. If it did it would be more convenient. After he gets a few hours on the tractor, it will slide in perfectly without having to do anything extra.

JerryG,
I am confused a little bit. I thought the pto was hydraulically locked and by working the joystick loader I relieved some pressure allowing the pto to go into gear. If I understand you right, you are saying it was a mechanical issue? And by "bump the button" do you mean the electric dash button for the pto. I'll quickly admit I don't have much hydraulic knowledge short of understanding it runs on fluid flow and pressure. Did I do something else and not know it? I did step on the clutch and put the tractor in gear. Just a blind hog rooting around here, I guess.

If they haven't changed them on me this is how they are. When you engage the knob it engages the PTO drive. If you have a mid PTO, it is activated when the knob it turned on. If you want the rear PTO engaged, first you engage the lever. then you turn the knob. You can leave the lever engaged if the rear is all that you use and you put the safety cover on the PTO stub. It would easier to visualize if I could post the mechanical drawing of it. I have been having computer problems for a week. One of the other members wanted a drawing and I haven't been able to get to him either.
