My understanding is that some dealers do that as a courtesy, which costs them money, but they are NOT reimbursed by the manufacturer.

I was told this by the various brands in my area. I was told before I bought. So...doesn't everyone know that before they buy? Or are dealers not mentioning that?

If I were a dealer, it might depend on the situation. But I would not want to be expected to eat the costs of the manufacturers errors.

It mainly a difference between dealers. Our JD dealer charges for every pickup. The Kubota L3940's glow plugs weren't working the first Winter we had it, didn't take long to tell there was a problem, anyway they came over 25 miles one-way and brought a rollback just in case. They said the dash would have to be taken apart and it would need to go to the shop. This was Friday morning and it was back by Monday lunchtime. We asked if there was a charge and they said nope just glad it was fixed and ready to go. She uses it everyday to feed her nearly 60 head of cattle and had to resort to the IH 574 while it was gone those few days. Nearly all tractors come with a sticker that says pickup and delivery not covered under warranty.

Grateful11, cool story about the Kubota glow plugs / dash repair.

As a customer, I wish dealers could pickup/deliver for free, to us. But as the warranty is contracted via the manufacturers, I would not want to be the dealer stuck footing the transport bill, especially for a lemon. There might be some situations where I would handle it differently as a dealer, but I doubt I'd be able to do that for all customers.

It's a put yourself in the other guys shoes kind of thing, IMO.

CALL THE AREA REP AND DISCUSS.

Being able to drive your car to the garage is not a useful comparison in this case because there is no corollary for your tractor. If your car "dies" and it's under warranty, guess who pays to tow it to the garage? Not you...

If the part is owner-installed, how does the old part get returned to JD for warranty purposes? What happens to that part for future warranty coverage? If the part is so easy to install that the owner can do it, why can't the dealer do the repair on site (it surely doesn't require the same investment by the dealer to send someone to do a small, on-site repair as it does to pick it up and re-deliver it)?

The reps, and the factory, need to understand that we don't all have the means to transport our machines back and forth to/from the dealer when repairs are needed.

I'd just pay them and ask for some oil or a filter when you go back to the dealer if I felt like it was an excessive fee. It costs them a lot to pick up machines. Think about the employee, truck, trailer, fuel, dot fees, registration, and liability ins. My motorcycle dealer rarely picks up machines for free unless they goofed up.
