Project Farm (YouTube) did a video comparing trimmer strings. Round string did much better against hard surfaces than string with edges. I haven't tried round string yet, as I have a lot of edged string to use up. I might just buy a small roll to see if it is better with chain link.

One thought for hand cranking the engine - adapt the crank to use a battery powered tool.

There is also the issue of burning more fuel to power an electric heater vs. using heat already generated by just running the motor. That is, electric heater costs money to run. Heat from coolant costs no extra. In either case, an electric fan is needed so that cost is moot.
