Excellent read on the collapse of empires is Sir John Glubb's Fate Of Empires (can fetch it off the Internet- not a long read, but well worth it).

DieselBound, many thanks for turning me on to Sir John Glubb's Fate Of Empires. I'm in the middle of this fascinating read. Not the first time I've read about how all empires fall, however he is very illuminating on the subject.
