    Home weather station suggestions

Years ago out phone rings at 4:30 a.m. Some guy said he wanted to know the weather since he was going hunting (our phone number was one digit off from weather report number). 4:30 a.m. and I'm mad as can be..."do you have a window?" I ask. "Yes" he replies. "Well open it and stick your head out...

    Good morning!!!!

I'd like to find mine. I have a Wang calculator which was a big deal in 1969. The manual for it from my memory is 2"-3" thick. It uses nixie vacuum tubes for display. It's in two parts, keyboard/display then a cable goes to this "suitcase" of boards. Probably a museum piece now. Engineering...

    I was snookered!

Two unusual things come to mind: one is years ago (20?) my wife gets a $1,200 bill from the city of Baltimore for an unpaid parking ticket! So I call the Baltimore number on the bill asking questions. They got her car and tag number correct (her '55 Chevy BelAir), I ask when & where offense...

I got an early Christmas present

Wow...that's hard to take just reading. How old are you, if you don't mind me asking. I certainly hope you had enough insurance coverage and hope things can be replaced. In my case it turned out OK, insurance company replaced part of barn roof that collapsed and replaced a shed with a larger...

I got an early Christmas present

Oh man...I'm so sorry. That's horrible on many levels, sentimental things, all your stuff. Years ago I got really good advice from an agent (rip Ken...a great guy) who said everyone should go around their home & garage taking pictures. Otherwise you can't remember everything.

Self driving cars will get their drivers killed

Self driving cannot outdrive/out think an experienced driver. The maneuver I made was insane, illegal and not one a computer would make...but we're safe & sound because of it, and I could give other examples.

I have, ice storm not fire. As long as you have coverage and good insurance company you should be fine. The hardest part is remembering everything that was in there. They'll have an aduster come out.

    Legal?

I had a '96 GMC pickup truck I ordered new. That night I removed catalytic converter, installed a J.C. Whitney "test pipe"[emoji38]. It ran lots better and I got it inspected every year. One mechanic said something about it...then "it must be a Canadian model".

    Engine Block Heaters

Years ago I had a VW diesel Rabbit pickup. I just put a trouble light with 60W incandescent bulb in it under the oil pan a few hours before starting it. I did same with diesel tractor. Anything around it, either side to block wind (cardboard or quilt). Heat rises and it really worked well.

That's very true but I got so sick of those car extended warranty ones I was in garage working on something and put it on speaker phone. I just made up (shirt), it's a 2015 Chevy Malibu 83K miles. After his spiel I said "is the carburetor covered?"...yes it is. So I strung him along with bs...

As a teenager I worked at a service station and owner also sold cars. He had a '68 Road Runner 440 4 speed he bought from a friend of mine (spoiled rich kid) because his Dad bought him a '69 Hemi Superbird. The fact is during the 60s-70s muscle car era while true from the factory, exception being the super stock cars, weren't all that fast but they gave you the building blocks (no pun intended) to go fast. Tools & equipment that are fantastic.

Tools are strange in a way. A contractor friend/neighbor and I built a horse tack room last year. He had an expensive pancake air compressor and a Paslode framing nailer. Submersible well pump went out, thoughts?

Yours is acting exactly like mine did before I replaced pump. The pump ran longer, light stayed on...I set pressure lower just to get by but eventually replaced pump. The first pump in the 1980s pipe was galvanized and I pulled by hand. That was a job! The second replacement I pulled pump, I...

Self driving cars will get their drivers killed

Self driving is nuts for many reasons. Here's one example: My wife and I were going home one evening, the last traffic light is about 4 miles from home. My well is 85 ft deep, been here 42 years. I've replaced 4 pumps over the years. Last year had a Goulds pump installed (they're very highly rated). I can see merits and arguments for/against both. Here's why: A coolant heater temperature has to get up to operating temperature (180°F or so) to get heat. Dealer says its the potentiometer attached to the foot accelerator. Isn't that the same thing as an automotive throttle position sensor (drive by wire)? If it were mine I'd buy a shop manual and/or simply find out where the sensor is and remove it. A potentiometer is another name for variable...
