Well, that is a good option. I didn't realize they had a much larger fuel tank on that bike.

The motor in it is fantastic.

I'll have to look into luggage options.

I'll probably opt for plenty of rustic sleeping arrangements
I think they came with optional side cases. Put a top rack on with a Givi V46 and you're golden.

The VStrom keeps coming up as an option. Though I won't lie, 120HP FJ09 would be a helluva lot more fun

I sure wish Yamaha US would bring in the Tracer 7 that the rest of the world gets. It's a middle weight tourer utilizing the excellent CP2 motor. Think touring version of a Tenere 700 with more wind protection, tubeless wheels, cruise control, 1/2 gallon larger tank, adjustable seat.
The GT version includes center stand, factory panniers, and larger adjustable windshield.

Yeah, the CP2 ane CP3 motors are nice. I've always been partial to triples, but owned my share of twins. The CP2 sounds so nice

So I’m working on a plan for a trip west on highway 50, and Route 66 back. We have a family friend who has stage 4 cancer, and he as been a rider his whole life, survived Vietnam, and he said he wants in… he wants one last long trip. I have doubts that will come to fruition, but man I’d like to be there for that.

I hope your friend's cancer goes in remission and he can make the trip.

In June a friend and one of his buddies are riding east to Ocean City Md to take Rt 50 all the way to Sacramento (I think that's the end). Then down to LA to ride Rt 66 up to Chicago to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of Rt 66.

So, this man was my son’s first college professor… my son was 14 at the time. So, they bonded and we all became friends. He has no symptoms, but went in for an MRI because he survived lung cancer like 20 years ago. Well, they found stage 4. We will see how it all plays out, but I’d love to be a part of that story, yeah

Best Wishes for the trip, and your friend being able to make it.

I'm sure he'd want to ride his own, but if he's not up to it - sidecar ? Not suggesting you buy one, but I'd say it's worth a post on ADVrider, looking for assistance. If I had the time, money, and a sidecar, I'd help you myself.

Not a motorcycle but a convertible sports car (Miata, Mustang) would be fun to ride across country together in.

No cages. Nope. I really want the wife to go, but she is not into endurance riding and sleeping outside... I am. I have a year to work on her.

Not the same at all. Years ago I thought the same, so I bought a Mustang GT convertible. Didn't realize what a hurricane of wind hits you in a convertible at freeway speeds - something you don't have on a motorcycle, especially when protected by leathers and a helmet. There is a suction around the front seats caused by the windshield; depending on how fast you are going, if you have a lady along her hair is either swirling around or pulled forward toward the windshield. My wife hated it. Only time it was fun was in a place like Yosemite where speeds were slow and with the top down you could see the towering cliffs, which you can't see from inside a sedan.

Plus...when you park in public places an open convertible seems to be an invitation to vandalism. I'd come back to the Mustang from a quick trip into a store and find all kinds of garbage had been thrown into the car. So I had to put the top up and close the windows if I parked in a public place. Sold the car after 5 years.

Even with the side windows up ?

I was thinking of his friend with cancer who has maybe one last trip. A side car was suggested which then isn't a motorcycle at all because it doesn't lean. My comment was may as well get a convertible with all the advantages it has over a side car rig.

You're right about wind turbulence in convertibles. Guys with SXS's end up with the same problem. They add a roof, then a windshield but that creates a backdraft blowing all the dirt and stuff in the bed forward at the riders back. So then they have to add a rear shield, LOL then doors.....

I've had a couple convertibles, the Honda S2000 incorporated a little screen behind the seats that could be pulled up for highway speeds. It was maybe 8-10" high but really blocked a lot of the backdraft.

Sure remind me of my favorite car I ever owned that was close enough to a motorcycle. Also where I got my user name from because it was what I had to keep telling people. It's not a Z3 it's a S2ki.

The more I research, the FJ09 or a nice Triumph Tiger or Sprint would be nice for the trip. I am so in love with triple cylinder motors, and the FJ09 is also so light. My FZ09 is th only bike I've kept for more than 2 years... I've had it for 12! That engine is just ridiculous

In 1982 I bought a new Yamaha 550 Vision, discontinued the next year. It was unusual because a 70° water cooled twin and drive shaft drive. It wasn't a speed demon but it sure was smooth and quiet.
I sold it to a friend who put many miles on it before getting rid of it.
Now I wish I had kept it.

Yes, Highway 50 (route) western terminus is in West Sacramento. It used to go all the way to the Bay, but over the years the section from West Sacramento to the Bay has had numbering reassigned (1972). West Sac has the matching sign to OC, Md.

I also think it would be fun to go end to end on H50, but maybe with the 5th wheel :)

Have been from the original terminus at the Bay to Nevada/Utah border. And, from Annapolis to OC, Md (coming from Baltimore airport).

In OC, like monkey bread from Bad Monkey, and dinner at Hoopers Crab House.
