BX2670 rear pto cap

Right up front, I will admit it, this is maybe the stupidest question I've ever asked.

So here we go, after 12-15 years of owning this tractor since new, I've never removed the cap covering the rear pto. Now I need to, and..... what the devil holds this thing on? Besides factory paint. Is there a clip, does it need to be twisted, if so, which way, or does it "just" pull off?

I'd like to know what I'm trying to loosen before I break something in the process of learning. (Been there, done that, many times) I've looked through both the owners and service manual, and, nothing. Just says keep the cap on when pto isn't being used, but what holds it on? It's an open, unanswered question.

It should have a 37410-63112 cap on the rear PTO. There might be a bolt holding it on although the parts diagram does not show one. You will need to depress the two clips on the sides to get the cap to release.

Well it is an unusual question... I've had quite a few tractors incl. several Kubotas but I always used the PTO and it has been many years since I thought about the cover. Comments are: There is very little likelihood of you hurting anything back there. I assume it is rubber or plastic and you can just pry it off (assuming grabbing it and pulling doesn't work.) The best thing to check would be fasteners -- bolts/nuts/screws? If there are none there can't be a heck of a lot holding it on. I think our old family Massey Harris Pacer in 1954 had a cast iron housing over the PTO with three 1/4 inch bolts an lock washers holding it on. I still have it some where. You can rest assured there there is no expensive complex rig holding it on (like an O-ring with dual duty of holding in the outer PTO bearing -- nah, no manufacturer is that dumb.) If you find no fasteners, yank on it hard. If that fails, pry it off with a stout screwdriver. I promise I won't tell anyone.

I was thinking the BX I had it just pulled off. I don’t remember any clips but it’s been a while ago I owned a BX2350.

Mine had a slip on rubber cover. I still have it to this day. I put it on when I'm not running the PTO. Goes on and off easily because I keep a slight amount of lube on the output shaft.

I've never kept a PTO shaft cover, period. Shaft has never rusted up so that sliding on a PTO driveshaft is difficult. Now the cast iron end of the driveshaft does rust on my rotary mower; I have to clean out the grooves with a small file every spring.
