Ok, i pulled the muffler and the piston looks good (pics enclosed)

I ran her until she cut out, tried starting her again & she started but died pretty quickly. As in the vent tube/vent video, i opened the gas cap, closed, and she started up fine and ran well like in the beginning. So, it could be a clogged vent tube. I'll pull it and see what i find, but just want to make sure nothing is on the other end??

Maybe a new thread, but another issue. When running her, no oil is being didchsrged onto the chain/bar. It is just dripping straight to the ground. I cleaned the cover and the body of the chain saw, fired her up and same.

Let me know if this should be another thread? Thank you very much !!
The vent tube is not attached to anything but the fuel tank. It is just a piece if tube that has a couple of set screws inside of it. You can just grab it with needle nose pliers and pull it off. You can try to run the saw with the vent off to see if that is your problem. But I would still pull the muffler and inspect the piston. Just be careful and use some penetrant on the studs before you loosen the nuts.

Just an idea here ...but I have a husky 55...I had to buy a replacement tank for it (believe it's from an old 50 saw) I was suspect on a tank vent tube being clogged on mine ...after some research and a YouTube vid...
I found a vented cap that fit a husky brush cutter, that would fit my saw tank ....I just skipped around all the vent tube issues that way ..

I pulled the vent tube. Sprayed some PB Blaster into it, let set for 10-15, fired up compressor and hit it w 60 PSI...i thought my compressor was not wking. I tried w out applying pressure into vent tube and she blew perfectly. Not one iota of air vol would blow thru the tube. I'm ordering a new tube.

Now to diagnosing the lack of chain lubrication?

I don't anything about Stihl saws..but a lot of husky saws have an internal pipe in oil tank with a filter screen ..that can clog or break or come loose ..then check the oil pump itself for function ...I'm guessing if made similar it's a worm gear on crank behind clutch ...that drives the pump .
If it's not a pump/oiler problem check to see if the oil holes in bar need attention..I saw a guy in my saw group that had to drill the oil holes in his bar because of tiny metal fragments (from chain/bar?) had clogged them up .
And make sure the contact plate between bar and oil slot is good and not needing replacement

It looks like you found the problem with the vent. Don’t overlook a new spark plug either. I can’t remember if you said you put one in or not.

Thanks MF & Dave.

I'll Ck the oil pump & then if then if the hole on bar is plugged or not. If all good, then I'll dig deeper..

I have not replaced the s/plug. I'll pull it and see if the center electrode has any meat on it or not? Prob a good idea to replace anyway.. ✔️

Well, I thought I found the problem. Even w the new tank vent tube, it is cutting out again. I also replaced the spark plug w an NGK to spec @ .020 or 5mm. I have new fuel in her and my MS290 is running perfectly with same fuel and oil. I think I am going to pull the carb and see if the vent screen is clogged. I also ordered some new air-filters but they only fit the MS290 and not the 029. The back side of the screen on the 029 is completely flat while the air-filter on the MS290 has a slot in it for attaching to a rubber receptacle. I am ordering a filter for the 029.

I am open to other suggestions again. Do you think firing her up w air-filter off and spraying some carb cleaner into her at WOT might help?

Thank you.

One reason I say a new plug is on my MS250 it was running bad and hard to start. When I took the plug out you could grab the electrode where the spark plug wire attaches and pull the entire thing out of the plug. It’s surprisingly long even though you know how long it should be.

Yeah, I just replaced the s/plug that stihl says to use and there's no difference...so, it has to be something else.

Any specific make & model that fits the 029?

I heard that if you replace the original carb, that the 029 orig carb is no longer avail and it has a few changes. Would any of those changes make any other part need to be changed too?

Thanks

Do they make rebuild kits for those carbs. I’ve had mixed results with carbs from Amazon, more bad than good.

a rebuild kit might be a better idea, as long as none of the orig parts are cracked/defective that cannot be replaced. Also, are the rebuild kits using OEM parts or after mkt? If the latter, it would really be hard later to troubleshoot the carb for any issues, agreed?

Also, I corrected my post above that was cryptic at best...did that on my cell and bad typing.

thanks again

I was using an older 029 last year with an amazon carb replacement on it. It ran as good as my original carbed one. I could not tell any difference.

Id o know i bought a carb and fuel kit for one of my Husqvarna string trillers. Brand name was Shnile, it has worked great. Brought a dead string trimmer back to life.
