Didn't you buy property near Hayward WI?
We did but ended up selling that property (too small) and buying another property again, near Hayward. I now have 8 acres to play with. The snowmobile trail is about a half mile from the house so I don't have to trailer. That is a huge plus.

Haward gets, and keeps, a lot more snow than SE Minnesota but still not close to what the UP gets. And they still get the occasional warm up periods and some rain.

Perhaps 200 inches of snow each year might overwhelm me and perhaps after one winter I might ask myself, "what was I thinking". But since winter is my favorite season I would like to experience it.

Maybe I should find a place to rent from a UP resident who skips town to avoid the snow for winter.

You could stay at our camp if you like? Not sure you are following our "camp found" thread but its "snow machine access only" location. How is the snow at Hayward now?

Right now snow conditions are pretty decent. The trails have adequate snow (they could always use more) and they are grooming. There is plenty of snow in the yard and the scenery outside the house is beautiful. So perhaps I shouldn't complain. I just have wanted an environment where it snowed every two or three days. My co-workers question my sanity.

A lot of open water.
It takes much time and cool weather to get its temps down. I believe the lake was record warm this fall and that might be why we are seeing near record snow fall on the south shore..

Went fishing Saturday, was surprised at how mushy the ice was in places. Should firm up by next weekend.

With Lake Michigan so open, we're getting pretty good lake effect. Got another foot last night. Real light and fluffy.

Why does Lake Erie freeze so fast? Really shallow?
The average depth in Lake Erie is 64', so not counting Lake Sinclair, it is usually the first to freeze.

Being shallow, its volume is low, too, as the water retention time in Lake Erie is three years, compared to 191 years for Lake Superior. One reason why Lake Erie's fish kills and pollution cleaned up pretty quickly as the pollution going was cleaned up. Remember the Cuyahoga river fires?

All the best,

Peter
