I'm not sure that would fly around here.

With the caveat that while many states follow the Federal rules, here are a few Federal regulations that apply for interstate transport.

Around here, the highway patrol follows the Federal regulations, although I haven't put it to the test personally.

There must be a DOT plate fastened to the tank by the manufacturer, and the metal tank must be "permanently secured to a transport vehicle" per the Federal DOT. (CFR 49 & 173.8(c)) The flashpoint of the fuel must be more than 100F, I.e. diesel.

Each tank has to be less than 119 gallons (450L), and a maximum of less than 1,000 gallons total on a vehicle. Anything more requires a HAZMAT endorsement on the driver's license and binding/insurance.

There are state rules here that require plastic fuel tanks to be filled on the ground. Gasoline tanks can be 5 gallons, and must be secured in a pickup bed.

That's not to say I haven't seen folks not adhering to the regulations, but none of my local stations allow large plastic tanks to be filled. Then again, the only off-road diesel stations are a ways away, and require a fuel card with monthly minimum purchases. (Which I don't meet.)

I get off road diesel at a station and nobody has ever said what or how to fill the containers. I even use one red 6 gal. container for diesel and nothing has ever been said. Credit card is used and on my way. I think the cashier is busy enough that they couldn't care less. I doubt they would call 911 about the color of your fuel can.

The owners actually have the Off Rd. Pumps on camera also. That's how they knew about the Red can! It's been Yrs. ago and I've actually pumped the Off Rd. in the same Red can. A few times. For the very little fuel my Yanmar uses I've used Reg. pump grade not really bothering with the extra tax cost with todays prices.

Typical for threads to get off the main or first posting! Red Diesel and wanting to know the difference than Reg. pump Diesel in a Auto.. It's all good IMO. The Good, Bad and yes the Ugly!! Nobody making you read it so it's all good. Nothing compared to the shops I've been in and listen to the guys.

Fuel transport regulations can be an issue around here as well but they are rarely enforced. Some stations object to filling jugs with diesel that aren't yellow but there are a few that don't seem to care.

I get around all these problems by using home heating oil that I pump directly from the oil burner storage tank. In these parts, it's the same as #2 ULS diesel. A neighboring land owner does the same thing and he doesn't even heat with oil. The heating oil delivery guy either doesn't know or doesn't care. Solves the storage tank, minimum delivery requirements and any transport issues.
