I need some advice on replacing/rebuilding the head on '47 Farmall C. Where would I go to boy a used or rebuilt head? AND should I replace the cylinder sleeves while I'm at it?

I think they do but just not much here as far as Farmall is concerned. What engine does that tractor have? This is the forum I use for Farmall support. FarmallCub.Com

There's not a ton of activity on there but if you post a question you will get a response and there are some really good Farmall guys on there.

Do you have any cracks?

I'd try cleaning up what you have before going out and buying new. From the photos, that just looks more dirty than anything else. There is at least one stuck valve, but that may be able to be repaired.

Valve lapping is easy enough.

Pull the head and take it to a shop to have it services. The valves need to be lapped as well. They can check it for cracks and true it up if it needs it.

No places near here that do that kind of work. I replaced the heads on my '91 Crown Vic because I couldn't find anyone to rebuild them....

Thanks.

You're in Michigan? Is there anybody in Detroit that works on cars?

I believe Farmland Tractor in Tangent Oregon has a full machine shop. They have an eclectic selection of parts tractors. But if you have a good head, start with that one.

You need to follow what those guys on the Farmall site are telling you. Those guys know what they are talking about. Like they asked, what is wrong with your head? No way you should need to replace that head. Those guys also know where you can get surplus parts if you will ask.

Thanks to everyone for helping me!!!
The only shop in Alpena, NAPA, had a 2 month back log the last time I checked with them.
Of course there are shops in the Detroit area however, that's 5 hours away.
I have done 3 "head jobs" ( V-eight automotive engines) and found that a replacement, new/used was so much faster and in most cases cheaper. Thus, the "replacement" approach.

Obviously, I want to make sure I get the correct part so that's my interest in the casting number, thinking that was needed to get the right part. I can't find a casting number on my engine but apparently if I us the engine size that will work.
I have been working with the folks at the Farmall site as well as searching the web for a used/new head. New/rebuilt runs upwards of $500 so I believe used is a viable option understanding the risks.

Again, thanks to everyone for your help.

If you don't have any luck close to home, feel free to contact me. I am a retired master mechanic and machinist, but still have a shop here at the house. First clean and check for cracks and surface warp. It's quite possible that head would only need the valves refaced and lapped in, along with knurling the guides and re-cutting the seats. Mic the cylinders and pistons. You might need a set of rings and nothing more serious. Folks used to ship motorcycle and antique tractor heads in from all around the country to me. Let me know if I can help. This winter is going to be cardiac re-hab three days a week until the first of the year, so that leaves a lot of spare time. themotorsickledoc@yahoo.com or text 931-627-5370

Farmall A,B and C all use the same engine. EBay is a good place to look. I have several Of those engines setting around, but Im in West Virginia. I restore a lot of those old tractors.

I own a 66 model Gas 606 and this is a place near me that seems to have loads of old IH parts tractors and a wealth of knowledge.

Rebuilt head for my 4 cylinder VW is north of $1,000. Some guy with a good reputation a thousand miles from me. New could be a bit cheaper, quality unknown for VWs. Local machine shops that did work for me in the past have closed up.

Call a REAL tractor dealership and ask who they have work on checking/rebuilding heads for them.

Dons Tractors must have some work done for them...

My business is Dabbs Engineering And Design, started on a part time basis in the 70s. It catered strictly to motorcycles, particularly race bikes. I have owned and worked in several shops over the years. I got started working on tractors before I was a teenager because I had and I enjoyed it. we didn't send our equipment to a dealer. we fixed ours and the neighbors. My whole point was to let Mike know that I am willing to help him out if he needs assistance on computer or phone. I have done that all over the world after getting a computer with a webcam. If it happens to be more than he wants to tackle, my shop is still available to those that really want or need help. If you ever run across a set of D.E.A.D heads on a Harley- Davidson, they came from my shop.
