JD 4510
Well, this is the third forum I've been on to try to decipher this issue. I will eliminate all the back story and get right to the problem. I have a JD 4510 with a Yanmar 4TNE84-EJT45C engine. I bought it used. It had a blown head gasket. I decided to overhaul the engine, not knowing whether it had gotten hot enough to take the tension out of the rings. I got the parts from JD. The rings came in a Yanmar package. When I went to install the pistons, the top ring wouldn't go in. I discovered that the top ring groove wasn't deep enough. Yanmar and JD confirmed that they were the correct number. My machinist ordered new top rings with the correct dimension. The engine is a assembled and has been running for 2 years, but uses a lot of oil. I want to tear it down again this winter and overhaul it, probably .010 over. What my concern is, am I going to have more problems with parts not being correct. Are rod pin diameters going to be different? What is this engine? Is it a reject engine that JD bought to keep costs down. No one has been able to answer my questions including JD and Yanmar.

Since you purchased it used. Is it possible the engine had been previously overhauled using after market parts, and those parts are not OEM standard. Rough example. Mahle piston rings won't fit a non Mahle piston.

Thanks for the reply. It's been 2 years since I had it down, but I think it had a yanmar number on the piston. And there was no evidence that it had been apart before. The tractor has 1700 hrs. on it.

If your machinist was able to source needed parts last time work was done why not have him source all the parts FIRST and then do machine work to match new parts?

The guy I use won’t do it any other way and every snowmobile, car, tractor and several other engines came out perfect.

The other consideration could be the parts have superceded and they are not backwards compatible.

I did a search on the internet and there appears to be complete rebuild kits that you can purchase. It would include pistons, rings, wrist pins, cylinder liners, main and rod bearings, gaskets etc. It would probably be cheaper than sourcing individual John Deere parts, These parts are a matched set as far as the piston, rings, wrist pin and cylinder liner are concerned. How the rod and main bearing match up needs to be investigated.

Indeed go with a full rebuild kit. You will need to determine if oversize is needed.

If it did and the prior owner had aftermarket sleeves/liners placed in the engine, then yes, the OE rings would have an issue.

It is always best to buy a full matching rebuild kit. From a Yanmar reseller, you typically save 1/3 the cost vs going to Deere.

Thanks again to all for the replies. Again, these are all assumptions, but the overall condition of the tractor bordered on poor, so my assumption is that it came from some government entity. And I really doubt it had been apart. I am going to get a complete rebuild kit when I get it torn down. I was just stumped as to why the rings didn't fit.
