If you are happy with paying them, all that counts. Up here the school board especially squanders the tax money as well as the road board does and always have.

Least the local school board got their feathers trimmed last election. They wanted an additional millage on the ballots for whatever and it got voted down solidly. People around here are tired of paying taxes and getting little return from it. Taxiation without representation is alive and well here so they think at least, at least until their millage got hammered that is. Lot of folks around here that are up against it. My wife is constantly donatying to the local food pantry and is always accepted with gratitude.

I think the property taxes in my county are very reasonable and are actually used for things that I can see: fire district, roads, and yes local schools. When my kids were in school, older people paid for them and I’m ok with paying for the next generation, provided that the cost is reasonable, and in my case it is.
Around here the property and school taxes will run well over $6000 for a moderate home, a small farm will be over $20,000. Larger places and other locations can be and often are higher and much higher.
I've seen mortgages were the tax escrows are larger then the principle and interest payment.

I pay $3000 per year for 20 acres, house, and barn. Very reasonable. Of course I’m sure that some of the higher taxing counties also get better road maintenance and other services.

$1600 for house on 1 acre, $350 for 20 acres of forest here.

Roads are kinda crumbly, though. ;)

New York State is notorious for high taxes. Not as bad here, but close. I bet like here you don't get value received for tax outgo either.

Why a lot of commercial businesses relocate to Indiana. Interestingly, Omni-Source has its headquarters in Toledo, Ohio but corporate is in Fort Wayne. Only thing in Toldeo is a scrap yard and a tiny bit of office people. Also interesting is that Omni is partnered with the people that I worked for in the steel business as well as Steel Dynamics in Butler Indiana. I guess when you can control both finished steel as well as the resultant scrap it's better and with the Steel Dynamics mini mill in Butler, you can really control where your raw steel is being made as well. Been to Steel Dynamics many times as well as Omni in Fort Wayne and Toldeo. They referred to all of us as a big family. Omni as well as Steel Dynamics and my old retired from employer, Heidtman Steel, all relocated at least in part to Indiana for tax reasons as well as Indiana is a RTW state.

Interesting business I got to be a part of.Michigan was a RTW state until our democrat governor reinstated the closed shop deal which I considered a huge mistake. I believe she did it to appease the automotive sector and the UAW.

Now, if you get hired here in Michigan and it's a union shop, you must join the union with no choice, or quit. That in my view is totallly anti American.

Not quite... you don't have to join the union, but you still have to pay the union agency fees.

If forced to pay union dues as a condition of employment, only a fool would not join and that is the point actually.

Having said that, Neither Omni nor Steel Dynamics or HS is union. The repeal of RTW here was never put to a vote either. The governor took ot om herself to repeal it.

Myself, I prefer RTW. That way if you work in a unionized establishment and eant to join, you can but if you don't, your choice entirely. However. they way I understand it even if you aren't a rank and file member and have an issue, the union must still represent you in the initial steps prior to arbitration. Working in a union shop for me was brief as I worked in a non union shop most of my working career. The outfit I was employed at for over 30 years, paid better than comparable union rate, had better healthcare and better retirement as well. The owners knew that if they didn't offer a better employment package, they would have wound up with a union. So they did and stayed non union even though I delivered to union plants all the time..
