The 4014 through Central Illinois this week. Love those brake pads.
Beautiful photos!

If that's all it has for brakes, I can see why it needs an accompanying Diesel with regenerative (?) braking to meet modern safety standards.

Can the steam pistons provide braking?

Are those brake shoes a composite material and or a cast iron material?

Why not put dynamic grids on the tender, fed by the drivers turning that big electric motor in the cab?

I have RR experience when I worked for about 5 different car repair shops over the years as a welder. (ak carmen) This thread is about anything associated with RR's.
I worked at a sugar factory , used to move all the rail cars across the road to the pull line , always picked up broken coupler pins to use for drawbar used to find all kinds of goodies laying out in the yard

I'd guess you mean knuckle pins?

Don't even need the knuckle pin if you keep the knuckle closed.....saw that many times

If you lift the operating lever without the pin the knuckle falls on the ground a real nice surprise in the middle of the night

True but. UP keeps a diesel locomotive in the consist to power the cars. While 4014 has an onboard generator powered by steam, it's no where large enough for auxiliary car power.

I would like to see a modernized E-7/9 B-unit to be the locomotive traveling with it so as to not break up the lines of the passenger cars.

Cool mornings make for pellet car steam! It's 46 degrees in Culver MN but the trees aren't fooled though. Fall color is a week or so behind normal but there has been significant change in the last 3 days making for a nice going-away backdrop for this U717 from Fairlane this morning.

DMIR Southbound ore loads with engines SD40-3 408-411 is seen at Wyman, MN; and shortly after Northbound ore empties led by engines SD40-3 418-417 is seen coming and going at Wyman on October 9, 2004. (old pics)

Interesting video, my doodlebugs were a bit different.
They consisted of old one or two ton trucks rear ends and frames with an engine and usually two transmissions in series to get low geared log jumping off road vehicles to run around on logging woods roads. usually no cabs and old tires chained up with a weight box on the rear full of rocks for traction.
