Got this old backhoe last year for pennies. First thing I did was new filter and fresh transdraulic fluid. Probably put on 20 hours last year and an hour this week. Today I just needed to dig a small hole to plant a tree. I was able to finish the hole, pack it up and put the tractor back in its home before I realized this huge bulge. What’s going on here? It amazes me that I was able to finish digging the hole.

Wow, it grew a kidney! Cycle the levers (engine off of course) and that should shrink back down. You have to relieve the pressure anyway before you take it apart. Good thing it didn't let go.

Easy fix: new hose. Shops all over, that can make a new one. Have them reuse the ends.

I wouldn’t reuse those. Small ends aren’t that expensive and those are pretty roached anyway.

I'm with 4570Man. NEW hose and NEW ends. You might want to take the old ends with you. So they get the correct new ones.

Wow quite a goiter. If that was mine and keeping with the small investment theme I’d probably pick up a pre made hose assembly at Blains, TSC or similar farm store. That is if that’s just a NPT thread going directly into cylinder port which it appears to be. Other end would have to be npt also. Get the assembly with swivel at one end for easy install.
(MxMS).

Thanks for the replies. Gonna head to TS this week and see if I can’t find something to throw on there. Probably due for a fluid change anyways so I’m not too upset about it, especially being that she didn’t bust her guts all over the only pair of pants I have without holes in them.

I don't know if it has been mentioned, but hydraulic leaks can be dangerous. A stream of oil not easily visible, under the right conditions, can penetrate your skin and cause extreme problems! Be careful

I did come across such warnings in the manual. Apparently if you get hydraulic fluid under your skin it is a huge deal, and not something you should just “rub some dirt on”.

How long should I expect to get out of a new hose?

A quality 4 wire hose can last 30-40 years. A made in China 2 wire hose lifespan is considerably less.

If you're not in a hurry, there are many online options available that make up custom hoses at a good price, usually quite a bit cheaper than locally. Just learn to know your fittings [most have good reference pages] so that you order the right thing. And yes, I would look into changing the other exposed hoses out that look just as bad that haven't let loose yet.

I've never replaced a hydraulic hose on my 1972 IH354 (it has a loader) but I've replaced two hoses on the backhoe that came with my 2006 John Deere 5205. Both tractors are parked in a shed out of the sun.

Some auto parts stores make hydraulic hoses. I use a midwest chain called Parts City. Take the old one in after you have drained all hydraulic oil out of it. One place i sometimes use even has a sign on the door to leave hyd hoses in your vehicle. They come out and get a measurement.

Wrap it with duct tape. If you can’t fix it with duct tape… it can’t be fixed.

I have a 24 yr old JD with FEL and drag box, my habit is to change all hoses in a set when 1 goes bad. All the hoses except 1 were original when I bought it. When 1 fel hose went bad I replaced all 8, when 1 steering hose went bad both got done, soon it will probably be the 4 main transfer hoses. I agree, no China hoses.

Couldn’t find one at TS. Seems they have mostly 1/2” and I need 1/4” so I’ll order one online tonight. What are these fittings called? Both ends of the hose are female and have a flared in shoulder.
