How in the world did Toyota ever get the reputation they have? The PR team must have been brilliant.
The Hilux and Landcruiser you guys cant get...

Now, how American built Toyotas got that reputation, thats the question...

I hate to rain on anyone's parade and I have driven or owned Toyotas for over 50 years.
To say that Toyota will take care customers is Totally off the mark, as in hogwash.

In the past 15-20 years and as recently as a year ago, Toyota has settled many lawsuits, class action suits, over a plethora of complaints. My wife's Toyota Prius had an inverter issue where the electronics in the HV inverter could fail and could, and did, leaving motorists stranded in a middle lane of a busy California freeway. There were some reported fatalities.

I would love to say that TMC stepped up to the plate and assisted all of the affected car owners but no, they denied, denied denied, were caught in lies and were caught lying in Court and the NTSB over this, the gas pedal sticking issue, the emissions issue, their cut throat consumer loan practices etc
I would estimate that TMC has paid out well over 2 billion dollars in fines to the Feds and compensation to US consumers.

These were not voluntary paybacks or rebates. TMC was forced to do so. I did not mentioned all of the criminal complaints and it grieves me to give a synopsis on a company I once thought very highly of. NO MORE.

Just search for Toyota class action suits. re our Tundra's, expect more lies and obfuscation.

I still think very highly of my old Tundra, but trust the dealer or the Corp? NO F Way.

of course YMMV
And now Toyota was caught falsifying Crash Test safety data on some of their cars. Looks to be mainly Europe?

Already hit with a 15 Billion drop in market value, they also halted sales of some models.

Several other Japanese manufacturers caught up in this as well.

Just stop.. I added the same thing everyone else added. Context. When we talk about our favorite or not so favorite, whatever, the logical thing to do is compare it to it's competitors. I bought my first Toyo in 1976, my first Datsun in 1979. There have been few years that I haven't owned at least one of them. I could only wish that my newest Ram truck is as good as my 2008 Tundra has been.
JUST STOP

Your "context" distracts from the stated OP's info about failing new Tundra engines. There is no context in hearing about your first Datsun. Provide info on recent Toyota failings with their Tundra that many people have recently bought and have legitimate concerns. There are thousands of late model Tundra's, used, on CarMax and other sites with extremely low mileage, quite possibly due to the ominous engine issues and Toyota's response to the CURRENT issue. Why do we need to hear about your first Toyota from 1976?
Again, what does it matter and what does it add to this thread? I would prefer to from informed sources that can help predict TMC's plan to assist us, Toyota Tundra owners, some with very healthy payment plans.

Details on that one are debatable regarding whether it is a bad thing unless you are a stickler for the exact rules. They used data from development testing that passed to higher levels than required instead of repeating tests. That one I don't hold against them.

Selling driver data collected by their in vehicle system and app to anyone that wants to pay, that I'll hold against em.

"Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed on July 15, 2024. A second notice will be sent once the remedy is available. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331."

Dude, this is a tractor forum, chill out. There have been multiple posts about the writer's first Toyota or Ford or Datsun in this thread, including yours. No idea what your ass rub is over me but get over it.

When did we stop being able to get Landcruisers?

Toyotas got their reputation from the buying habits of American consumers who chose in their own self-interest to get the best value for their money. No one coerced them, no fancy ad gave them market share and no brand loyalty is there that wasn't earned.

I've seen Toyota trucks left outside at 25 below (in northern New England), started at 7am, slammed into gear and driven all day like stolen and left outside again at night. Next day, rinse and repeat. And it's this kind of word-of-mouth that travels. They just build vehicles that people are willing to spend their money on.

All makers make both good and bad but my Toyotas have been absolutely trouble free for me. No weird glitches and I feel I got my money's worth.

But now, I'm concerned about the turbos and I know I don't want one. I hoping if they do go south someone else will develop something that I can trust. We'll just have to wait and see.

Turbos have been around for a while. Most on this board don’t see a problem with them on diesel trucks. Like everything when you start building engines from scratch problems show up.

What about all the other 10’s of thousands of vehicles started at 25 below in that same area. Are you saying only the Toyota started and survives that regiment, and all other vehicle brands were pampered or needed repairs?
I’m not sure your single vehicle, anecdotal story proves anything

Manufacturing debris left in the engine. I don’t see how that has anything to do with it being a turbo design, unless the manufacturing debris is a lie from Toyota.

There are plenty of pictures online of the damaged bearings. Debris in oil passages is never good.

I'm on my third turbo car. The first two went well over 100k miles before I passed them on. All of mine have been tuned though not radically. My wife just bought a turbo car. We've had zero problems with the turbo systems and few problems over all.

I suspect this Toyota problem is with a process, like not fully cleaning out the machining debris. Which has nothing to do with the turbo.

Toyota’s reputation for toughness and reliability goes back to WW2 with production of the first Land Cruiser in 1951. Land Cruisers are built for developing countries without decent roads. That’s why you see them in all the old National Geographic films and why they’re still the vehicle of choice in Africa, South America, and Asia today. They used to be tough, simple, and easy to repair.

The US doesn’t get the diesel versions unfortunately but the 5.7L V8 in the gas LC is the same engine that’s in the previous gen Tundra and Lexus LX570. The Lexus GX460 is known as the LC Prado overseas and is a very durable vehicle as well. Can’t think of a more durable vehicle than a diesel 70 series Land Cruiser.

Toyota has always had a very conservative approach to building vehicles. They never have the latest tech. They let the big 3 figure what works and what doesn’t then incorporate what works.

It sounds like some of the repairs were only short block replacement and reusing the turbos etc. I would demand an extended warranty under those circumstances.

YMMV. Had an '08 turdra (that's what my co-workers and I called it) for a company truck at my last job. Biggest POS that ever darkened my driveway. Some of the issues detailed here in a different thread.

I never said it was.

My problem is generic in that placing turbos on production gas engines, and all that it entails with consumer understanding of use, is not something I want to do. Others can, but for me it's diesel, yes but gas no, regarding turbos for the time being.

I don't know anything about debris in the engine. I have only had Toyotas since the early 1980's and have lots of trucks and only one issue. My '95 ? T100 had a recall for a possible bad head gasket. Ouch that hurt but they fixed it, gave me an additional 100% engine warranty of maybe 60,000 or 100,000 miles and added free spark plugs, oil change and water pump.

Before that I had GMC and Chevy. On the truck, the dealer denied me on a rusted fender warranty claim by saying I never was in for it. I was indeed in---three times and he knew it. That was 1979.

I'm still in love with Toyota and just bought a 4Runner. I wanted a Tundra to tow local but no gas turbo V6 for me so I bought a used Ford turbo diesel p/u for towing. I still have a sweet 2017 Tundra 4.6 V8 that I'll drive till I drop. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
