Huh, my neighbor has one and has the same clamp. I always assumed it was a machinist's clamp that he put there for some reason. Guess I was wrong.

Surely looks like part of the locking mechanism for the loader frame. When removing that loader that front crossbar comes with it and act as the stand.

Had a 790...you're right!!!
I looked at this thread an hour or so back. My 790 (traded off years ago) had the same clamp...trying to remember why it was there was driving me nuts!!
Pretty sure it clamps to the weight bracket

JD had some early results of people ramming into objects (i.e stumps, rocks, abutments, etc. ) and bending that closing plate in the front, to the point that the plate was not holding the FEL tight enough that bumpy travel was allowing the FEL to come off. So the safety device (Clamp shown) was issued to all early customers (I was one) and then became standard part with the new FEL's.
I don't use it, but do put a 3/4" bolt through the front plate and the front weight bar. That keeps the plate from coming unlatched.. plus I don't ram into things to bend up that front plate.

I normally removed the loader unless there was a need for it

Doh! I can only imagine bumping across the back yard, when the loader falls off!

Reminds of what an old friend used to tell me when we'd get his tractor into deep mud, "if we get this thing stuck, there ain't nothing in the neighborhood big enough to pull it out!"

I remove mine when not needed, but always when winter comes and the snow plow goes on. But this quick tach FEL is easy to switch back and forth. The safety latch/bracket in question is not needed if the parts in front are not bent up and remain straight. But apparently there were a few instances early on where the FEL came off and caused some concern, but was a result of abusive use of the tractor. The type that can wreck/destroy an anvil.

I dont feel so bad now...lol. I've owned the 790 for about 6 years now.. I asked my FIL who is a tractor guy and didn't know either.. so i don't feel so bad when I scratch my head trying to figure it out. I don't see it doing anything but sitting on the front bracket.. it holds nothing g atm. I thought maybe a lock for front weights? I will take better pics of mine tomorrow.

Only keeps you from opening/releasing the latch on the front weight bar, which is needed to lower the frame and remove the FEL. Have to remove it first before removing the FEL.
