Good morning!!!!

For the next week or so we are looking forward to daughter's travel for the State Department to Austria. She always keeps us involved with pictures and videos as she travels. She has traveled to many countries and continents in her role as a intelligence/defense contractor and now more recently at the State Department. It gives us a lot satisfaction that she is successful and keeps us involved in sharing her experiences from being under rocket attacks in Afghanistan to travel to remote places of the world

Cool and sunny this morning.

Buckeye, it seems like the cost of everything to do with construction is out of wack. I wonder if people who are building now will be able to get their money back when they sell. I get the feeling people have a lot of money to throw around. Hard to tell if things will ever get back to normal. Will I be telling my grand kids that I can remember when you could get a stud for $2?

Drew, Rolling the driveway after grading really helps it last.

Chris

A lot of people thinking things gotta go down, that these prices can’t be sustained. Who knows.
I’m pretty discouraged right now.
I’m not sure if it was the $20-25k well estimate, or the fact wells in that area are so deep. Not sure I want a 700 ft deep well even if it was already on a lot. In ohio you hit oil at that level

I bought my previous WV property at $1k an acre about 28 yrs ago. It had 4-5 acres nice on top, and the rest down the side of the mountain. Most bought for hunting.

I like WV because you can still build things yourself without a lot of hassle. But will look in VA again.

Good Morning!!!! 82F @ 7:00AM. Abundant sunshine. Record high temperatures expected. High near 110F. Winds W at 5 to 10 mph.

Always nice to hear from some new faces on the GM thread. Welcome!

I need a lot of new gravel, too, Drew, but I don't even want to think about what trucking fees have become.

I dont know about those little red Hatch chilis, Ted. When I was chopping up the green ones, I ate a dime sized piece and it was more than plenty hot for me. I was worried a half dozen of them would be too hot for the stew, but it came out just right. A pleasant heat, but not so much it burned our lips. Lots of folks in NM like it that way, but that's way too hot for me!

I'm still watching the real estate markets in a few different locations, and all of them are experiencing price deflation now, Ted. Interest rates are up, and that's taking a lot of buyers out of the market. And with aligatoritius on the run, more and more people are going back to in person work, and they're rethinking their plans to move out into the sticks and telecommute. I'm hoping my patience will be rewarded in much lower prices in a year or so.

Very helpful info about the wells, too. Thanks for sharing.

Nice find on that stainless cabinet, Paul. You gonna put casters under it?

Lots of new wildfires in Northern California since this heat wave started. Had one yesterday afternoon only a mile across the canyon. As usual, my first clue was hearing a fire bomber circling. Then I watched as a fire truck came up from the south on the road at the top of the ridge, and stopped in front of a large barn. There was so much smoke already in the air it was hard to tell where the fire was, but they got it stopped at two acres. No hint as to the cause, again as usual.

We've also been under a FLEX alert for the past few days, where people are asked to cut back on electricity use in the 4-9PM hours to avoid rolling blackouts. I wonder how the powers that be expect us all to charge our new fangled government mandated electric cars when we don't even have enough generation capacity to keep our homes cool in the summer?

Did some juggling on the network and removed a defective switch yesterday, than got it boxed up to return for a warranty replacement. Be interesting to see how long that takes. That's two strikes now on the Ubiquiti equipment, no make that three. The first "smart" doorbell I got went belly up after a few months, too.

Spent the rest of the day inside putting together some web pages to document the restoration work on the old motorcycles these past few years. Have to get it done before I forget the details.

Hang in there, gang, Friday's comin'!

Solar power seems hard to justify unless you are off grid. Payout periods of 8 to 10 years does not look appealing. I have the space for it and have looked at it from time to time but considering payout period and cleaning and upkeep over time it does not work for me.
The company I worked for was into building large solar installations including some with mirrors heating boilers and generating steam for turbine generators. With the right power sales agreements this can be very successful

What model and year motorcycles are you working on?

Good morning to all! Low of 52°, going up to 87° today. A slight chance of a sprinkle..... then tomorrow has a better chance, then the weekend brings us some moisture from the storm off the Baja. Very good storm chances over the weekend and early next week.

M7040, you are blessed, being able to deal effectively with the family issues. Sounds like you have overcome a bit of adverse problems.

Mark P and Scootr, welcome to the GM thread!

We also have some spam 2-3x a year. I consider it very good cooked on the grill.... just changes the taste / consistency for the better. Even if going into eggs, I still grill it first.

BEF, I am curious as to why you want to leave your current place.... it's beautiful! Too big?

Drew, try to remember where the paint is supposed to go..... on the door. I have a good visual of paint spattered all over your front....
Did you find out what happened to the tractor yet?

I was awakened last night with the worst abdominal pains that I've ever experienced! So bad, that I seriously thought about going to the hospital. Lasted about 2 hours, then slowly got better. This morning, the belly and flanks are actually sore to touch, like the areas are bruised. Seems like my entire abdomen was in a bad muscle spasm....
Definitely strange, no gas, no diarrhea, no vomiting....
Wifey had a similar issue / pain on Tuesday, just as intense.

I'm going to hold off on working on the Jeep until maybe this afternoon... I don't want to aggravate the abdomen and have to experience that pain again.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Yesterday's focus was on a 1963 BMW R69S, but most of the bikes are 1981-1995 BMW R100 machines.
They are cool bikes. The older bikes don't have a bunch electronics and are simpler
to work on. Also the shaft drive is neat

Don’t recall all the details.

what a marvelous answer I got. Not done yet. :sneaky:

got painting done at church, got into some nasty wood around door to kitchen, rot, delamination, fixed it as best as I could
and used a lot of Kilz primer on this. But the handrailings and entrance way to Nursery School all painted and looking nice for school opening on Monday.

At some point in future we'll change out bottom four inches of wood. As usual wicks moisture up from bottom

now out to mow the lawn and I bet there are more tomatoes.

The 1963 forks were unique with the hinged design just before they changed to telescopic forks

MD high taxes, politics and just the hassles you get trying to do any work yourself. MD does not want to deal with homeowners doing their own construction. The permit process is very cumbersome. It is a pretty area, and will be hard leaving the house I built.
But, if prices are high elsewhere, I’m better off staying put.
Now if I sell my house here, there’s a lot more cash to work with. I’m trying to buy land , initially for camping on, while still keeping what I have. For retirement I would like a 1 story handicapped accessible house.
I never heard back from real estate agent after emailing him last night about not putting in the offer. Wonder if he’s mad?
Today I emailed and said in light of the high costs I’m getting to run utilities to the lot, I’ll offer $10k less on the land. For that they can leave the tank, I might need it
I expect to hear crickets.

LS, hope you feel better.

66°F and .02 inches rain

Busy day ahead. Concrete.
Have to go into town pick up bags of Quikcrete and rent a mixer. Then it will be an intense few hours mixing and pouring. Then clean up and return the mixer. Only getting 1 day rental.
Will be glad to see this day over

Prayers for all
Be safe
Have a great day

The electronics aren’t that scary. I went from scratching my head over what I got myself into to have a pretty good understanding of the engine management system of a Kawasaki EX650 that landed in my garage. Helps the electrical system is “simplified” to on/off, start, and engine management.

The R69S still uses points and condenser. I tried to replace them with an electronic controller, but the lightened flywheel on the bike threw off the timing when kick starting, rendering it useless. The coil isn't in the best of shape, either. A very good friend gifted me with a standard flywheel, but before I could install it, something went bang in the engine and now only one piston goes up and down. Fixing it isn't a priority right now, but some day...

Post 1980, BMW went to a Hall Effect trigger, which they placed where the points were located, at the front of the engine. There were problems with shortened life due to the heat, and the unit was inadequately protected from high voltage surges if one forgot to connect a spark plug. Fortunately, several after market companies have come up with better replacements. I'm using one that has an optical diode to sense crank position, eliminating the vagaries of the factory cam triggered unit, and is immune to the voltage surges and heat. It even has an LED that comes on when it thinks the crank is at TDC, which makes timing very easy to set. And it has multiple advance curves, one of which is good when another spark plug is added to each cylinder. That setup uses less advance, so it allows the use of regular octane gasoline even at higher than factory compression ratios. Anyway, the rest of the electronics is an old fashioned wire loom and mechanical switches, a far cry from the computer networks found on the modern bikes. Except for the turn signals, which are controlled by an over complicated pile of resistors, capacitors, chokes, and other junk that also fails prematurely. There's an aftermarket solution for that, too, that features auto turn signal cancelling.

The last generation of the airheads featured two u-joints in the drive shaft, with a rubber damper in the middle to cushion the drive line. Unfortunately, the buffer would slip and the two u-joints would go out of phase, resulting to premature failure. Again, there's an aftermarket alternative that is bullet proof, and costs less to replace than the factory part. I don't miss chain maintenance at all.

The Earls fork design was especially good for sidecar use. The R69S frame has mounting lugs for a sidecar, but I doubt they'll ever get used. In the late 60s, BMW put a pair of telescopic forks on the R69S and called it the R69US. Not as strong as the Earls setup, and the handling wasn't that great, either. It's amazing BMW continued to make the air cooled twins as long as they did, especially after Honda came out with the CB750 in the early '70s. Thank goodness for stubborn Germans!

Do you still ride motorcycles?

lawn mowed, veggie garden cleaned out, 4 four foot rows of radishes planted, lots more seeds but I'll save them for Spring.
Picked a nice green pepper that was hiding and pleased to see that first year raspberries are showing up, though likely not edible.
Unless I net them the birds will get them. I'll do that next year. Need to make some different fencing to keep them in place. Blueberries are sedate
compared to raspberries or blackberries, latter shoots out canes like mad.

sure would be nice to hear from Eric, hear his take on things. Hope he is ok.

about time for a hot soak, all my chores done. Rugs came in, now I know why there were so inexpensive, was one of those magic cameras like
the ones that take shots of the drive thru burgers and you think you are going to get something like that, wrong. These rugs can almost be seen through, shaggy and wispy.
Well, if they get wrecked, no loss. And my track record on flooding isn't so hot.

very pretty bright blue sky out, nice day to be outside.
