790 running the pto while stationary

I have a john deere 790 that I inheritrd after my Dad passed. never did much with it and he didnt have the manual that I could find any way. My question is how do you get the pto to stay on when in a statiinart position and off the tractor. I would like to get a pto wood chipper. when i just used it this past weekend i noticed that it only seemed to spin when i was moving. thanks

Your JD790 is really a Yanmar in JD green paint. With the engine at idle let's walk thru the steps.

The transmission operates with gear shift lever, range shift lever, and clutch. Gear shift lever selects one of four gears or reverse. Range shift lever selects high or low range. Tractor must be stopped, and clutch used, to shift gear or range.

In other words, it's the typical Yanmar PowerShift. Place the gear shift lever in NEUTRAL. Place the Range shift lever in NEUTRAL. Now for safety apply the brake and lock it.

Now you are ready to place the PTO in action. Move the lever to activate the PTO spline to spin. Increase the engine RPMs to a comfortable speed prior the 540rpms on the tach gauge. Depending on what your run stationary, 450 up to 540 PTO rmps is a nice working range.
