Rather than tying up new farmland, they should put solar panels on the malls which were put on farmland 40 years ago.
Farms raise plants and/or livestock; electricity is neither of the above.
That's pretty much how they're doing here. Either the malls have the roof full of panels or the shade structures (not sure about the proper name here?) on the parking lots are full of those or both.

Now THAT makes some sense
You get a DOUBLE DUTY system.
Shelter AND your little solar panels.
Im good with that.

Local dairy has 20 or so delivery trucks. They built steel lean-to shelters with solar roof panels to shelter their delivery trucks. They installed electric lights and outlets underneath to plug the Diesel engine block heaters at night.
Better than the panels being installed close to the ground killing the ecosystem underneath them

Our issue in my part of the country is my local government vehemently opposes business unless it is Ag related. Anything solar gets rejected with the excuse that it infringes on Ag. Even if the land is lying fallow for years and the owner sees no future in Ag.

Yet there's generally SOMETHING growing on the space.

Do people really want restrictions for land use, even when it is making electricity that everyone uses? When will it end?

I see cutting off catalytic converters and scrapping them is also a big deal. Wonder what is in them?
Platinum, palladium and rhodium. All are precious metals, but the Rhodium is the most valuable.

So if we cover millions of acres in solar panels, what does it do to oxygen emitting plant life under the panels?
IT kills it.
Enviromentalists cry about diminishing rain forests and cutting trees down.
Will they cry about diminished plant life here in the USA because solar panels eliminated millions of acres of oxygen emitting plants?

When will IT end?

Has anyone done a comparison of the energy created by a typical nuke plant compared to the acres of green space killed off by a comparable solar farm?
Solar Farms reduce plant life

Let's face it. It's the farmers that are selling the land for solar farms, industrial parks, housing developments, pretty much everything.

And has been profoundly professed on here year after year, is that people have a right to do with their property as they see fit.

So we could ask why are farmers so willing to sell or lease for these projects? Is it because they can't make a living at it? Is it because their kids want nothing to do with it? Is it because they realize they're working themselves to death and can make better, less stressful money by just selling/leasing it? Whole bunch of questions there.

I like the NW Indiana solar farm project because it's not some eminent domain project. It was brought to the 60 or so land owners by a private company and they are leasing the land. They will retain that land in their families. While 13,000 acres sounds huge, we have a friend that owns 10,000. 1 owner. This project is 60+ owners. And of that 13,000 acres, only approximately 2500 will be in solar panels. The rest is woods, wetlands, and crop lands. The spaces between the panels can be farmed for vegetables, berries, sheep grazing, and honey. By not tilling that soil every year, erosion issues are negated. By not farming that soil, pesticides and herbicides and fertilizer will not be entering the environment. Solar panels have a much lower impact on the ground underneath them than farming activities do.
