Too much plow?

Well fellas I picked up a like brand new14" single button plow for my ground breaking . I'm pulling with my trusty ym226 . The problem is I am breaking virgin ground with a 5 inch sod and though the tractor will pull it about 2mph any little hickup such as a root will stall and rather than gut wrench the tractor I think a larger one is in order. The tractor does pretty well with it in worked ground. I am not wanting a large tractor to have to upsize implements. I'm thinking may be a 2600 ford are a more powerful compact with 4x4. Your thoughts please.

Why not just rent a big walk behind tiller for the first go?

You could rip it before you plow. Make several passes with a small ripper going 6" or so deep at a time then go deeper the next pass. Most any smaller tractor will pull one if you do it in stages.
Sod and tillers are NOT a good combo, cause you cant get it mixed good enough. Gotta moldboard that stuff under for best results.

Your Yanmar weighs about 2000 pounds? I am surprised it is having problems. Maybe dropping down a gear would help? I like plowing so for me, the slower I go the more time I have to watch the action behind me.

I have a 18" Pittsburg single bottom moldboard plow. It pulls easily behind my Kubota M6040. The problem - too many large rocks.

If I wanted to till large tracts - a heavy disk harrow would be in order.

Is this a "one and done" job, or will you need to do more of this virgin ground breaking?

How big is the area you're breaking?

If it isn't a huge field, and this is only needing to be done once, how about using a middle buster to break the ground, followed by the plow?

Are you then going to disc the whole thing again?

How about a 3 pt tiller?

how deep are you trying to go? Can you crowd the inside of the furrow to take a slightly narrower cut?

hire out that 1st ground breaking. lot cheaper than a new machine, should be manageable after that.
easy fix.
Or if you intend to upgrade tractor...i would step back & look at the big pic & future as well rather than just accommodate the plow itself. much easier to grow into a machine that can handle unknown future tasks, than have to turn around & upgrade when a new challenge comes around. best of luck
