Rhino 552
I just bought a rhino 552 tractor. After running it for a short time it is pumping all the engine oil into the hydrolics tank in the rear. What could cause this ?

Does the tractor have hydrostatic drive?

No it does no have hydrostatic.

No it does no have hydrostatic.
Then there are only two ways engine oil can migrate to the hydraulic reservoir. 1) Via the hydraulic pump, but this is next to impossible because of the pressure differences. 2) Via the crankshaft rear seal, through the transmission/differential, and into the reservoir. Is the engine oil low? Is the transmission oil low? Does the transmission oil seem to contain engine oil?

Personally, I don't think you have engine oil in your hydraulic system.

You are gonna have to tell us *why* you say the engine oil is pumping into the hydraulics. Did the engine run dry and the hydraulic tank overflow? Please explain.

Yes checked oil and trans levels. Both were where they should be. Brush hogged for about 1 hour. No oil on dip stick in engine trans was way over full.

Sorry I guess engine oil is all going into the transmission not hydraulics. Dip stick on side below the seat?

Are you sure the engine oil isn’t leaking?

No can’t see any leaks anywhere.

Sounds more plausible. Definitely a problem. You import this yourself? Have a dealer/seller that you can complain too? Sounds like a splitting of the engine and trans is in order.

Engine oil would have to pass through the clutch compartment in order to get to the transmission, I see no other way. Is this a new tractor? How many hours on it?

Just a thought: Did you check the oil and tranny cooler lines? Could be mixed up somehow and pumps oil through the cooler and then to to the tranny. Just spitballing here.

That 552 looks to be the 2 wheel drive version of my Rhino 'Shanghai' 554 (MFWD) tractor . Does the engine casting, left side say Shanghai?

There should be no way for the engine oil to get into the main transmission rear axle sumps.
when you say tank- is this tractor equipped with the backhoe that was available because IIRC they had an (external) auxiliary tank. Or are you talking about the transmission/rear axle housing?? Also there is no way that i can imagine this happening unless the rear crank seal failed badly.
There are no oil connections to the engine other than the oil gauge .
The oil level stick in the transmission will vary level If your tractor has an FEL and you check the dipstick with bucket raised versus ground level- (volume of the filled lift cylinders etc.)

ps. These are good tractors imo. BUT now that Farmboys US parts suppliers has shut down they truly are an orphan brand. parts will likely have to be bought/sourced from China.

I hope you got a good deal and didn't over pay, with the parts availability a concern now.

At one time these tractors accounted for over 2/3rds of all 50 to 70 HP tractors sold for home market use in China.

No back hoe. Yes I am talking about the rear axle housing. Must be a rear seal idk. Just bought the tractor used. First time running noticed the problem. Older tractor . Could have been setting a while. Seal would make sense. Just can’t imagine it would empty all the oil that fast. Will see if it has cooling lines and start looking deeper. Ughhh

Just thinking here....is the hyd pump mounted on the engine and could it be sucking engine oil past a seal? If there are hyd or cooler lines, did they get attached wrong? Like others have said, a dry clutch is in between engine and trans.....

Yes it does have a hyd pump mounted on the engine. That was my first thought . I will check lines . Could i reroute the lines so it just pumps out one and int the other at the pump?

Usually, when the shaft seal on the hydraulic pumps starts leaking and will fill the crankcase with the hydraulic oil. The other way around, I don't think it's even possible.
