If it was around here, that would be carpenter ants or termites.

Carpenter ants got under the bark near a branch on a Poplar here. Branch just slid straight down from the damage. Was about 20 feet long and 8" where it attached. Just missed my shed.

Seen while clearing trails over the weekend in the Ottawa NF in the upper peninsula of MI.
Wolf scat. Lots and lots of hair.

Beavers and porkies chewing on the same trees. Go figure??

A common myth is that "carpenter" ants eat wood...they don't...they remove rotted wood to create hollows for their nests...
