Who has decided there's a need for these safety cans anyway? Has there been that many killed or is this just to keep the new wave of idiots from getting killed. My great granddad, my granddad, my dad and myself have all used any bucket or can we can get our hands on and never once had a problem. So what are these idiots doing that require these dumb changes, smoking and they can't be bothered to stop???

You have to tip it backwards so the filler is the highest point. You are wasting space by not filling the handle area.

I don't doubt that this is where I am loosing capacity. As others have commented, I doubt the people that designed them have never tried to fill one to get the full 5 gallons in.

Electric tractor . . .

I think GE made some electric tractors some years back. Guy I know says he had one, liked it a lot. There's also a newish company named Electrek (or similar) which is offering electric tractors. Expensive, not a huge amount of time between recharges. Heavy, though, which is a good thing for tractors.

If I could buy an electric tractor with comparable performance to my Kubota 2601 (admittedly a smallish tractor) at a competitive price, I would. No noise or vibration, maximum torque at zero RPM, no transmission, no clutch, no cooling system, lots of things no longer needed. Actually, there would still be a transmission for the belly and rear PTOs, probably a 4WD engage/disengage, and hydraulic pumps for the FEL, etc.

I really couldn't care less what makes my tractor go, diesel, electricity, pixie dust. I just want it to work. If electric does a better and more cost effective job, electric it will be. I don't see it happening in the next decade though, batteries don't have nearly the power density of a gallon of diesel, and won't for quite a few years.

The changeover to electric tractors will be very slow because our internal combustion tractors have a LONG service life, but eventually, it will happen. We're already seeing it in mainstream automobiles (MustangE, and others).

I try to remember that the stone age didn't end because we ran out of rocks, it ended because something better came along. Same thing will happen here, not today, not tomorrow, but soon.

I have about ten 5 gal fuel jugs left over from my racing days (see below). I added a hose to a cap on a few of them with a ball valve in it so I can control the flow. I threw away all the red safety cans and swore off ever buying another one...
