Battery terminal corrosion

We don't want to leave cleaned-up terminals bone dry and unprotected.

Between humidity and hydrogen release we're begging for corrosion on both without something with dielectric and water repellent qualities.

In past I've used petroleum jelly, lithium grease, WD-40, and red grease, and Ox-Guard from my electrical kit for use with Al wire terminal connections, though pricey.

Two words: Fluid Film.

Not sure of availability on your side of the pond, but check with commercial power system equipment suppliers for similar produce, its pretty common produce (type) used on lead acid storage battery (back up ) systems...

We used it extensively when I was doing telecommunication power systems and did not have any corrosion issues....

The concept is to seal exposed metal surfaces from exposure to air and moisture thusly preventing corrosion crystals to grow....

Yes it will hold dust/dirt, because it is a grease, but a little surface dirt is a lot better than corrosion....

Silicone based dielectric grease available most any where (auto parts?) works really well too... Use it on fuses, and light bulb sockets (automotive and house hold) and many places where corrosion is not wanted....

You already own a grease gun, Right?
I thin coat of chassis grease on the post terminal after a fresh post cleaning with the proper brush works just fine. It you really want to coat the outside of the clamp that's on you but I never bother.
A old timer I worked for 34 years ago taught me that and it worked perfectly every time on his dozers, excavators, pick ups and 10 wheelers.

I spray my terminals and metal parts in the area of the battery with fluid film and that works for me .

Buy a sealed battery. Most are now. The exception is the cells with serviceable screw caps. A modern battery shouldnt vent gas. And not at the terminals. I have bought 100's of batteries through my auto shop. If there is corrosion from the gasses the battery goes back defective in warranty, replaced if out of warranty.. Most of those batteries were side post that leaked at the seals. Top post seals hardly ever leaked.

A sealed battery doesnt need water added...

I did spray a coat of AMSoil metal protector on the posts to prevent rusting of the bolt on the cables. If you are seeing venting of the battery the probable cause is overcharging.
