I'm surprised that there isn't a chunk of steel at the end of the chains.
I think about how well the chains worked in the old side delivery manure spreaders,
those chains had a steel T on the end.

I refuse to "ignore" someone calling me names. If that doesn't work for you Moss, then "ignore" me. :)

And neither does "the other guy" and then you both bring it down for everyone else. Take the high road. :)

Everyone following these discussions know who the problem is Moss, including you. Taking the high road is exactly why we have this problem. How about taking charge? :)

Yes, I forgot about those. They worked very, very well.

This entire site is overrun with obnoxious opinionated boors with no self filtering skills and no ability to consider any point of view other than their own.
Kind of like the world we live in.

The pins hold the chains are removable to allow replacement of the chains??

That's a very simple arrangement and could be fabricated pretty easily. Thanks for the great pictures.

Yes Richard. I forgot to point that out.

With some designs, the pin will come out to replace chains. It simply holds the chain by going through the link of the chain.

Other designs use those those chain connectors, like this:

Regarding weights on the end of the chain. Some people will weld a 3" long piece of flat bar on the last link.

They claim it works very well. I've never seen one working in person though. I've heard reports of the last link getting brittle due to the welding and breaking more easily.

Just looking at the pictures it appears to be 5/8" chain? Or maybe 11/16" chain? Sorry I don't know what that compares to in metric size.

Sad but true Rick.

Up to 52" mowers, it's 1/2" grade 80 chain. 52" and above, it uses 5/8" grade 80 chain. The bigger heavier duty mowers will use 3/4" chain 80 chain.

Using chains, does eat a fair amount of HP. This also why we run mowers as wide as the tractor or often a tad smaller. I can bog down my 35hp tractor with a 4ft mower in very dense and tall grass if I want too.

For reference, a 50HP tractor will run a 5 ft chain mower and may be able to do it with all the 4 chains on. Using a blade mower, that tractor would most likely run up to 7 ft or so.

Makes sense. It has to beat the material into submission rather than slicing it. Thanks for the guidance on chain size!!!

I wonder if a 2 spindle mower (Bushhog #3008) would work? can't see why not as the blades can swing but only on "plain".

I understand. So if a post is reported it goes straight to MC? You or the other Moderators don't see that report?
