Sometimes the summer and transition fuel does not get flushed out of the stations before it gets cold. I jelled up last year because of an early cold snap and it was no fun.
When I get my barn built I will get a 1000 gallon tank and fill it about February and use winter grade all year. I realize it will have less BTU's/power but it should not be a problem.

I always have such a mish-mash of fuel, dyed and clear, that I loose all track of what the grades may be. You don't want empty tanks because condensation is a worse problem than the wrong grades, so only partially used tanks are always getting topped up. If in doubt, just stick a sample in the freezer and see what it does. In fact, good reminder, I should do that, lest I get caught. Yeah, it's no fun.

My tractors I control the fuel additives and blending,
so if I gell it's my own fault.
It has happened a couple of times.

My pickup is fueled in town but I do not trust them to have the proper blend,
especially when the weather makes an abrupt change.
I do keep a couple of 5 gallon jugs of K-1 clear when it calls for a real cold spell,
along with a bit more anti-gell.
Only had just a bit of trouble with it one time, a splash of diesel 911 and idling for 10-15 minutes and she smoothed out.

In our area winter blend at pump gets more #1 as the season gets colder and less as winter gets warmer. So it's 50% #1 added for me if filling early in season. Got stuck with weak blend years ago and it will never happen again. Straight #1 needs a lubricity additive or atf added to it for injector lube.

I wish the stations listed what they have. I THINK my stations sell biodiesel. They have a sticker that says something like “may contain between 5% and 20% biodiesel”. The good thing is biodiesel has the best lubrication qualities if you have read the study. The bad news is it gels easier.

Up North biodiesel blend stops October 1st and starts April 1st each year when the Polar blend begins to ramp up for winter

The diesel in my home heating oil tank is what I use in the tractor along with an ounce of Power Service (white bottle) per fill up (7 gallons). The supplier tells me it is just diesel, but he doesn't tell me whether it is #1 or #2.

Sorry, I have no clue. But this site tells us that the VIS of Kerosene is less than #2 fuel oil.

Dyed Diesel and heating oil comes out of the same compartment on trucks here, just billed and taxed differently, so probably the heating oil follows the seasonal grade changes.

Around here all heating oil is #2, if you want #1 or a blend you have to specify it.
Outside above ground tanks are normally kerosene or #1,
buried or in the basement tanks are #2.
#2 costs less and has more btus.

Might just want to make sure your heating oil is ULSD, most dyed off road #2 sold now is, but if not and it's being used in late model tractor with DPF or DOC and has high sulphur content that might be a problem down the road. Either way it should be blended with #1 or treated to prevent cold weather gelling.

Is the difference in BTUs noticeable in engine performance? Is it worth trying to have the more fortifiied grade whenever possible?

In a tractor or a truck you will notice the consumption increase,
unless you are using all the available hp not so much the hp loss.
