I think the video I remember seeing was on the front skid steer, I assume run off the hydraulics of the skid steer. I think they make stand alone ones 5th at have there own engine to.

I gave up on a splitting maul several years ago, hard on the shoulder. I use a hydraulic splitter.

Hmm..... Is it common for the firwood processors to be run off a tractor PTO? Does that change anything about the size of tractor to get?
They can be bought pto powered or stand alone. Size of processor determines the pto hp needed...

Most buy stand alone and they are EXPENSIVE...

Hello!

Going to try later to update the profile, but i needed to clarify things.

Location: western part of Quebec, near Ontario lines.

Now for the cords of firewood. Either you guys consider me insane or we just do bot have the same units. A cord of firewood here is 8416鋳.

Last season i did 43 of those cords with my atv, a snowmobile, one sled, chainsaw.
Split by axe (in winter birch is like butter), manully loaded into my 8 pick-up box and my 48 tandam trailer to be delivered with love and a small ache!

So yes, i am talking avout 100 cords. I am buying a small firewood processor to manage that much.

You guys do not go walk the dog with your chainsaw?

Joking. I will give more info and feedback when i am back home.

Thanks for the feedback!

I'm still not sure how big it is.....Maybe something happened it the computer world that TBN computers don't like.

Different keyboard ans no unique ascii code make those mess.

So, here a cord of firewood is 8 feet long, by 4 feet high by 16 inches deep.

For firewood processor, i am looking into a small independant unit. It has its own engine, hydraulics and conveyors. Tractor is going to be use to feed the processor. Around 6000$ usd.

Also, to anwser a prior comment. I will keep the tractor on my trails. I do my logging in winter with anywhere between 2-4 feet of snow. Nothing beat and atv with tracks for firewood. I just cut the logs to a length the atv can manage. Also i maintain the trail with some wooden sled so it freezes deep and keep smooth.

The tractor would be used mostly when there is no snow to actually build/improve My trails. Also the winch would be a nice safety implement for those times that i have to beat up the atv to pull a tree that got hung up into another one.

Here in the USA, that would be called a "face cord", and as such would be 1/3 of a US cord.
Your 100 cords would actually be 33-1/3 US cords.

Crazy people!!

I knew it had to be some sort of unit conversion problem to cause those reactions!

That's right. Three 16" US face cords make a full US cord.... but it takes four if the split length is 12".
The old saying is that the cord is stacked "Too tight for a cat, but not for a rat"

Doesn't matter; it's still a lot of work and everyone's cords are different size. If you are going to keep logs to something the ATV will handle, you can probably get by with your original thoughts about a 30hp compact. For deep snow I like large flotation type tires - turfs or industrials - with as really good tire chain pattern in "X" with cross chains to keep the chains from falling between the lugs.

A winch makes good sense. I've never used one, but it sure would be handy. I used to use a pulley around a tree and a wire rope. The trick is not to ever get hung up.

I would be looking at a 40-60hp Kubota, Kioti or John Deere (50 hp would be just about right). As a different strategy, you can often find a used 95hp 4x4 Kubota with a cab at a very reasonable price ($30,000-$40,000).

Very affordable to rent. $450 for two days and will process 20 full cords of firewood in 16 hours. How long does it take you to put up 20 cords of wood? (4x4x8’ cords...not those silly Canadian cords...lol).

WOw. I dind't know there was such a thing as a 'US" cord of wood. ALways used face cord and bush cord. You learn something new every day.

I don't know that there is something formally called a "US" cord of wood. But cords are sized differently in different places. The same word means different things depending on where you are. BTW, what's a bush cord? I've never heard the term.

One of the problem that firewood sellers can never agree on here is high tight a cord of wood should be stacked. It makes a difference in the amount of wood in the cord. Is there a local rule of thumb for how tight a cord is stacked there?

Some people here sell by "rough cord" which they measure as so many FEL bucketloads dumped randomly into a truck bed. And others sell by weight.

Perhaps I should have stated that a cord of wood as commonly sold in the US is..... 4' high, 4' wide, and 8' long = 128cu. ft.

Rental, is very likely not an available option for the OP, in rural Western Quebec.

But up here in Canada we measure with the Metric system!

I do know that very well!
Have the bugs been worked out of the metric clock design yet?
I sold my house on Jordan Bay, in Shelburne, two years ago.

I love Canada's metric system. You can drive 80, 90 even 120 up there.
