I agree with chim. Seems it would be easier to raise the last two up and push them to the end, raise the 3rd from the end and install, then slide 1 & 2 into position and install. Since you already have the lift in place, it's right there and you're familiar with the procedure VS one more change in operations.

Anyhow, I'm sure enjoying your documentation, descriptions and photos. Thanks!

I'm learning it as I go. It's been a fascinating experience.

Best learning is by doing. And you have a bunch of armchair quarterbacks a long for the ride. Thanks again for sharing.

Great progress. Thank you for the updates. I know sometimes you aren't in the mood to do them. We all appreciate following along.

Got 3 up and realized we were running out of room so we decided to get them all up and on the front wall. Then slid 6 more forward and installed them. Going up and down scaffolding is the new worst thing. Good news is only 8 left, then putting plywood up. Have to cut the bridging, 99 pieces roughly 16", so my new miter saw will be perfect for that.

Right wall is 3/8" in, easy to tell with fixed width steel, so we're going to pull it out a bit tomorrow. It's 95F so we're working 4pm-9pm, by 5 we have a good amount of shade, by 7 we're in full shade except when we're on top.

Those metal joists sure look nice!

We got one up and it was backwards, the holes didn't line up, so we had to spin it around. That was a nightmare, but I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I'd have left it.

The good news is you caught it in time to fix 🤙

Started doing bridging between joists while the remaining joists were in the sun and roughly the temperature of the sun. I love my new saw, it works so well. And the laser is run off the plug, not off some crappy battery system that i leave on when i'm done and need to replace the batteries next time i use it.

got the last rim boards up, and the rest of the joists done. it was satisfying to get done.

The right wall is perfectly strait. Now with fixed width floor, we can pull the left wall to match the floor and nail the rim boards in. We're also 1" out of square at the top, so once everything is nailed in we'll attach a ratchet strap to the long diagonal, and try to pull it in. Once we're square again, time for plywood which will hopefully hold it. Then bottom plates, 2nd floor walls, and court on the 29th to see if I can get my 3rd floor.

Not that it might not matter too much... why don't you strap the long diagonal before putting in all of the bridging? Might be a little easier. Probably should have been done prior to the joists but hindsight is 20/20. Regardless... good catch. Looking great!

It was done prior to the joists, braced it, made it square, but that was 3 weeks ago and it seems to have shifted.

I agree with Mark. All those nails and screws you want to keep it square work against you if put in too early.

Will be interesting to see a 3rd floor. If not approved, maybe go with a Gambrel roof, you can get nearly same usable sf.

It's tricky. I had to go initially due to a setback variance. Normally 25' from the property line unless, through no fault of my own, the property is irregularly shaped prohibiting me from building a structure. Since it is, the 25' was waived and 13' granted, on the condition that I don't build more than 26' tall, blocking the 3rd story, because i foolishly brought up a possible in-law quarters down the road. They got so hung up on that they forgot about everything else. Granted the variance with the 26' height restriction. By granting the variance, they're admitting that the property is irregularly shaped, it's not my fault, and a variance should be granted. Tacking on additional unreasonable restrictions shouldn't be permitted based on the opinion of one of the members thinking it would look out of place. They're supposed to enforce the law established in the ordinance codebook, not dish out opinions, and the code book says 35' in height be it a garage, house, shed, any residential structure.

Your progress has been great to follow, and it's interesting to see the metal joists. Will you glue and screw the plywood floor to the joists?

I am curious about that as well? I'd be concerned about squeaky floors if not glued?

You talk like squeaky floors are a bad thing. I live in an old house. I think the squeaky floors are just part of it's character. Probably because it's easier to enjoy the floors squeaking rather than fixing it.

There's probably a glue that will bond to both wood and metal.

I've been thinking about that, but i haven't found a glue that will bond to metal and wood yet. My friend says it'll only break down and dry out after a couple years and it'll skweak anyway. But if I put gypsum board down over the plywood and then actual flooring there shouldn't be any noise.

52 screws per sheet of plywood though, how much can it really move to squeak?

   / New garage time! #599
Will plywood squeak on metal joists? I've never encountered metal joists before and wonder if it's even an issue.

The only thing that I can think of that would stop squeaking, if it happens, would be the tape used on metal roofs. I'm drawing a blank on what it's called.

PL Premium construction adhesive, or something similar should work. It's rated for almost any material including metal. You could get a tube and try it on a scrap piece of joist to decide if you want to use it. Or maybe contact the joist manufacturer to see if they recommend adhesive or not.
