I need to get things under cover, and my buildings never seem to get built. I have a nice level gravel space atop a hill which would be a good place for one, but don't want to exchange one problem for another. With no ventilation how hot will those things get? How easy would it be to put in some weather proof, rodent resistant vents? I'm thinking that if I bought a 20 foot unit it would hold all of my PTO run implements and a lot of other smaller things until I get something built.

I suppose that I can always leave the doors open in summer, I'm not overly concerned about theft anyways and it would be a challenge almost worth watching, to see somebody hoist my backhoe into their pickup.

With the sun beating down on it - I would guess about as hot as inside your vehicle parked out in the sun. 120F easily - maybe as high as 140F. The web site I checked said - with temps between 80F to 100F - inside a car can range from 130F to 172F.

I see problems getting things in and out. What's goes in first, come out last. I'd rather have something with the long side open than the narrow end.

For the money, you could quick build an open sided pole shelter. 4, 6, maybe 8 posts, a few beams and rafters, some roof tin. $500 or so. Add sides, or partial sides as time and money permit.

Plus the thought of being inside one of those creeps me out, if the doors were to close and get stuck. Or be closed by .....

Not as hot as a car but pretty hot. If you have electricity you could use power vents or just a wind driven whirly bird like on a house roof. Those would require cutting a hole. I would install these anyway just to keep mold and mildew down from being closed up.

Why not buy a per-fabricated wooden storage shed that can be delivered to your location?

They can have taller barn doors, reinforced flooring for heavier loads, can be insulated, have windows, and have a wide variety of different construction shapes to fit your desires.

At least in Montana these structures are very common.

In Maine, I think if you parked it under some trees, and left the doors open for the 2 days of Summer, when it gets really hot, you should be fine with a 20' container.
Two 20' containers, spaced about 16' apart, with a roof built over the space between, would be even better!

I store my ZD mowers and several plows in a 40' container without issue. Also had my previous L3410 in there for 13 years. It does get hot, but I never actually measured the temp.
As far as leaving it open... I don't do that as wildlife and feral cats have wandered in.

I suppose it depends on where you live. I painted my forty footer Jungle Green to blend into the forest where it's parked. A sauna would be a good description of the interior on a hot sunny day. I only store stuff I don't want in the sun or covered in pine needles in there. A 12 foot tinner and a thousand feet of garden hose. Stuff like that. Funny, when it was out in the open, I had to cover stuff in there with tarps, like my Cushman Mower, because condensation would just rain from the ceiling. I haven't seen that since I parked it in the woods. But, maybe I just don't visit it as often.

Are there any Metal Carport companies out that way?

You need 2 vents 1 down low to let cold air in and 1 up top to let the hot air out , They make ones that open on 1 end and open on the side but cost more money.....My wife has 1 at work real nice to load and unload you can get at everything....

I have two shipping containers on our property. I park my tractor in one and ATVs in the other. They do get hot but for storage it really doesn’t matter. The good is they are super cheap in my area and no rodents or bugs. The bad is they are ugly so you need to hide them and it always seems what you need is in the back behind everything else. Check prices on 20’ versus 40’. In my area there is very little difference in price. For the money I think shipping containers are the best bang for my dollar.

Paint with camouflage and nobody can see them....

Its's all about how much ventilation you want to provide.. As mentioned above, cool air in at bottom and warn air vent (wind turbines) at top....

The irony locally is a company is providing 4 wind turbines on top of container, BUT the are not expanding where the air inlets are in the four corners...Yes most containers have a crude small amount of vents in upper corners...

Figure it this way - Most of the stuff from China has ALREADY spent a month in a container.
A little planned solar powered ventilation can only make it cooler.
If you can squeeze it in get a 40' and put a door on each end.

The containers are half mile off the road in the middle of no where and an hour from my house so they look good to me. If I look out my bedroom window of our cabin I can see one corner of one container so they are fine. I would not want one in my yard but for rural storage they are perfect.

I have four (2 20's and 2 40's) They do not get as hot as a parked car in the sun does because there is no glass exposed direct to the sun. They have small vents at the four corners that help to cool but painting the roof with a mobile home reflective paint or putting in the shade is your best bet. Another option is a simple 40$ wind turbine vent from the box stores.

I like them for the security they provide as they are very hard to break into unless the vandals have bolt cutters. The are also great for controlling 'critter damage' as there is nothing quite like the joy of installing a new wiring harness because a mouse, rat, squirrel, raccoon etc. took a liking to the plastic wire coating. If it is used strictly for secure and dry storage go with the 40' if you want use the stuff inside pretty regularly I would choose the 20' foot model.

FWIW- Have you Googled some of the far out homes they are making with these containers? Pretty impressive

I thought the tool of choice would be a battery powered angle grinder with a good thin blade.
I'd prefer a flexvolt angle grinder.

World trade creates the need for 50,000(guessing) containers atany given time full of cargo with no additional ventilization. 5,000 (guessing) of them are full of tractors or tactor equipment.....

But, stuff is in there probably for no more than a couple of weeks. And likely with some ships holding thousands of these things, buried somewhere, out of the sun.

I had planned on putting vents on mine, after it rained in there from condensation, but after moving it to the shade, I have no indication that has happened again. Mine is rusting (Hey it was free) and maybe that makes for some extra ventilation.
