I DID do a stupid thing with my truck a couple of winters back. Insurance covered it but my rates went up substantially.

Sounds like some of my fishing buddies. Had one that said he would put the plug in for us. He did...put it in from outside the boat. Glad I double checked before we launched.
On a number of boats I've owned or been on, the only way you could get to the drain plug was the outside. The deck covered the inside of the drain hole & wasn't removable. Even if it's accessible I'd rather have installed from the wrong side than not at all.

 Well, I've never seen your boat and don't know what it is or how the plug goes in. Some boats may be made differently, I don't know.

On my boat the drain plug is intended to go in from the inside.

Putting it in from the outside doesn't work very well if you are fishing on a lake with a lot of hydrilla, stumps and underwater objects that could catch the latch on the drain plug and pull it out.

Plus if something did happen and your boat was swamped and you needed to 'run it out' having the plug accessible only from the outside would make it hard to get to and then get it back in.

But again, I have only had experience with fishing boats where the plug inserted from inside the boat.

My duck boat you better make sure the plug is in, it's 2" in diameter and there is absolutely no flotation in the boat.

I use the twist style drain plugs and install from the outside. Otherwise could you just put the lever up so it doesn't catch?

Boat drain plugs inside or out? I guess it's all good until it's not:

I used to keep my plug on the outside until I accidentally sunk my boat one day. I was in Alaska deer hunting and I had a plug with a handle on the outside. When we deer hunt we usually will anchor our boat offshore in about 10 to 15 feet of water. Since the tide rises and falls up to 30 feet every 6 hours, at some point your boat will be high and dry. When I came back to the boat it was no where to be seen. After looking closer all I cold see was the blue canopy. When we got the boat home (long story) the plug was missing. All we could think that happened is that when the water started coming back in the handle on the plug hit a rock and the plug fell out. So from now on i always have the plug in inside.
