Our furry friends are active. As previously stated had an air cleaner box stuffed full acorns last fall. Mice or ground squirrels?
Finally put some 1/2” SS screen on the intakes. Used leather hole puncher to make some holes to lock screens in place.

Spread open plastic plenum to fit screens which countered any restriction from the wire.

Tied a dryer sheet inside nose cone. No new nests over the winter.

I think a mouse could go right through those holes

Red squirrels will live like mice, invade similar spaces, stow similar snacks, might even chew off a wire to a fuel injector to gain more room to stash acorns 'neath an upper intake manifold. DAMHIK  Keep a hood open on parked vehicles as much as possible, it's called the "TBN Trick" by many. ;)

Consider using a few of these, also from Home Depot or TSC. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B012RGM7BO/ref=twister_B07T276CMS?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Don't put 'em in the open to invite birds and bait 'em with black oil sunflower seeds for NO ANTS or moldy people-food bait if they may be ignored for days and/or to minimize non-target kills. I confess some of these shown were caught using pieces of hot dog impaled on the trigger wires of 110 connibears but you didn't ask ask about trapping anyway. :) Still, you may get this in a handful of these between New Year's and Spring.

Had some work to do today with the mini x .. got in the truck with the intent to hook up the trailer when I smelt mouse..again. ..it was just a couple months ago when I posted last on this thread. And I changed the cabin air filter then..then again today..they got in and built another nest on top of the air filter. .. the truck had only been sitting about a week and they took full advantage. .. got that all cleaned and de smelled.. then got in the mini.... more mouse smell...they actare my gloves that were in the minis cab. Fortunately no nest, just a matter of degreaser and power wash to get rid of the mouse **** and smell. .. things are relentless.

Try leaving a light on under or near hood of vehicle. If no power in area use solar powered rope lights from local discount store.

My CATS don't like the light , They sleep on the tractor seats in the day and patrol at night , Leave me gifts in the morning........:D

One of the best mousers I ever knew would just leave a tiny gut pile not as big as the end of my finger. Something in a mouse he's pick over. I got three huge mice since Saturday, One was halfway out of the rat-sized trap he'd crawled to the back to clean out.

My barn floor array is 3 small around two large Tomcat poly traps and black oil sunflower seeds. I've only ever caught field mice, meadow voles, chipmunks and red squirrels that crawled too far into the building. Bait doesn't draw any bugs/critters or get moldy.

Went out and hooked up the chipper to the back of the tractor after I posted last time....Giant mouse nest inside it. Actually completely clogged the chute... That one was a simple fix but ...man. Mice this year are out of control

1/4" far better choice IMO. 1/2" mesh will keep biggest mice out, but the beasts don't wait till their fully grown to mate.

The mouse fight here has been brutal lately. Mt F450 had a nest on top of the cabin air filter a few months back. I replaced the 40.00 filter..all was good and then the truck sat for a week ....new nest in the same spot..another 40.00 filter installed. Went to use the mini x...mouse droppings and smell inside....more cleaning and bleaching.. Took the RTV out to spray the lawn...had that old familiar smell of mouse... found the nest under the hood and on top of the 80.00 cabin air filter...These critters are killing me.

Same up here in northern Ontario now too. I went to get in my new dump truck the other day (has been parked for a several weeks) and mice chewed every rag and roll of paper towel I had in it. They've gotten into almost every one of my vehicles now and no food in anything.

I tried that pure peppermint oil everyone says works, I put a bar of Irish Springs soap and dryer/fabric softner sheets and all that has happened so far is the mice have eaten the cotton balls that were soaked with the pure peppermint oil that is supposed to deter them.

Went to my crawlspace to change out the bucket trap. It had been a while, there were a few in it and it stunk to high heaven. Buried them at sea. Reloaded with peanut butter....

I used 1/4" Hardware Cloth and color coordinated duct tape. ;-)

Today I took the time to get some 1/4'wire mesh like you have. Removed the cowl on the F450 to make sure there was no nest under it..and there was none. Cut some small pieces mesh and screwed them under the rubber flaps at the sides of the cowel...Cant see any other access point where a mouse could get in anywhere else. Hopefully this ends the problem in the dump truck. I did notice a slight mouse smell even with a new filter..I believe the mice were under the hood on the inner fenders for a while pissing and crapping..once its pressure washed I hope the smell is gone from the hard surfaces.

I use bucket traps in several locations around the tractor shed and workshop. I get dozens of mice this time of year. I think it makes a difference because they've only put a few nests on the machinery, mostly the sides of riding mower engines. But it's a never ending battle.

I have 4 mouse traps in the garage year round with peanut butter for bait, chunky or smooth it does not matter.

I only reload the traps with more peanut butter when it's almost all gone, just reset the traps with dried blood/hair/flesh still on the traps and the mice do not care.

I've found that mice will lick peanut butter, cheese, or other 'food' from a trigger or pan without tripping it. :( One might use hot glue to attach popcorn kernels or Fritos to it & then smear on some peanut butter. (BTDT & it works, but 'high maint' with 'perishable' bait!) Once you taper off and they lick the last of it they'll bite and "you got 'em". (Tease 'em like a Spring bass. ;))

Folks, .. use this in mouse or rat size accordingly for mice, rats, red squirrels (who imagine/invade/stash/poop as mouse wannabes), and chipmunks. https://www.amazon.com/Tomcat-Snap-Traps-2-Pack-Mouse/dp/B000X7XQA6 (Tomcat-Snap-Trap, black poly)

Once again, forget any store-bought 'lure' BS. 'Black oil sunflower seeds' are THE bait to prevent ants, mold, and or non-target* catches!! Sprinkle sparingly around and toss them into the back of the traps and let the little ones trip the pan with their whole body weight when digging for the last morsel.

* When you good, that s__ don't happen.

Use the same location vs moving traps around. Mice have no bladder, so they 'trickle tinkle as they travel', a scent trail to be followed like ants leave by pheromones. Set on the passenger-side floormat to establish a hughwy network and make running your line easiest. Don't close the hood on anything that sits for more than 2-4 days. :2cents: :2cents: :2cents: :2cents: :2cents:
