I have a neighbor that was widowed 3 years ago. After Steve died I cared for her for a year. Told Steve I would. Then I weaned her. Took almost a year.

I wonder if your historic interactions with your neighbor and her current behavior are two separate issues?

Sounds like maybe your other neighbors and you have already started an alliance against this neighbor?

How old is the offending neighbor?

I think your right about the historic relations. I did everything she wanted. When it stopped she got mad.
She is 73.

What did the camera show?

It was a bluff. The camera view ended at the base of the box. We had the neighbor who cleaned up the mess view the camera while we were on vacation.
Funny how guilty people spill the beans when they know they are caught.

I dont have neighbors! I live in the woods a 1/4 mile back. I can anything I want to and no one tells me different.

I kind of figured it was a bluff, but no where did you mention what was actually said per if she was the one responsible or not.

There was a lot said. With the conversations before we left, the timing of it being knocked down, the black rubber marks that matched the golf cart bumper, the very limited traffic on our dead end county road, we were sure it was her. Then the way she acted so innocent asking about the mail box, to becoming so irate at the mention of a camera getting the perpetrator, it was very clear she did it. Then she said If we put it back up, the next time she would bomb it, and she said it worth so much hate.

She moved her mail box to in front of my property. No problem it is on county property. She did not like the mail delivery vehicle making the tire marks in front of her house.

I would have the local Postmaster send her a letter directing her to move her box back in front of her home.

After reviewing the USPS regulations, nothing is said about your box being in front of your home.

A 14 acre field went up for sale adjacent to our property, and we bought it, just to avoid having neighbors. It wasn't close to our house, but it was next to an area where I regularly ride horses, and I didn't want to potentially deal with quad runners zipping up and down the tree line.

My nephew thought that was hilarious. He said, "So you didn't even want it. You just wanted to make sure nobody else could have it!"

We did the same thing with 5 acres next to us !

As said, it's best to ignore her, it is probably the onset of dementia.

What I would probably do is let things cool down, then have my missus bake her a cake as a peace offering...(with a box of Ex-Lax in it).

I am just letting it cool down.
I really have no intention of ever having an interaction with her ever again. No anger or hate from me.
If the Sheriff came and said something about me pressing charges...I would not. I had been friends for all those years. I could not send her to prison. After all it was just the cost of a 4x4 and a little time to fix.
It is the back stabbing and vandalizing that I have a problem with. I can not be friends with that.

I think you have a very healthy attitude about it. A good friend of mine started having malicious trouble with a neighbor. He said "I just don't have any use for him". And he moved on.

Well.....let's see. If I had a "mailperson" like fuddy1952 posted - I'd be down to collect the mail every day. My closest neighbor is 4.5 miles distant.

We had the typical "mailbox vs college kids" issue for a couple years. They would drive down the county road and whack every mailbox with a baseball bat.

It ended when the local Post Master & I had a heart to heart with the Dean of the local college. Several homeowners had game camera videos of several of the incidents. Prosecution would have been long, drawn out and ruin the career of a few students.

We all applauded the quick & decisive actions of the Dean of the College.

I'm as guilty as anyone thinking they are "kids". They are not any longer. College in most cases for them is just a continuation of high school in their mine.

Personality changes and anger issues are fairly common with several different types of mental illness and dementia. Once it happens, treatment might help, but she probably is in failing health and no longer the same person you knew all those years. Since you cannot reason or make crazy people happy, you approach of ignoring her and having security cameras is probably the best option for now. Having a record of her behavior with the police is also a smart move.

What lake is this? I have a few clients on Lake ********* that live in the DFW area and just come out on weekends. Some of them I've never met in person, I just do the work and they send me a check. Usually there all get along with their neighbors real good, but when school is out, vandalism can be really bad, which leads to me being hired to fix the damage. It's always high school kids with too much time on their hands and clueless or indifferent parents.

Good luck with the situation. Shame that this happens to people.
