It would be a tough call to pick between my hydraulic thumb or my grapple. I think I’d take the thumb. View attachment 626231

I went the Cheap way because I can weld and Fab stuff the modification to my Thump with the Rippers and extra long teeth only cost me around $200 and I do not really have that much stuff to Justify a true Grapple. I have been thinking about how I can justify a front Grapple and I just can not come up with enough good reasons for my use to purchase one. If I could Justify it I would already have one. I think that they are a GREAT addition to a Tractor 20190525_112740.jpg20190525_112740.jpg

I would never have guessed that. I bought everything I needed to add a thumb to my backhoe, I just never did it.

Back many years ago when I had a tractor I put together a clamp on thumb for the backhoe:

But now I'd rather use the grapple:

Tough call as I have neither in hydraulic but for log gathering/brush clearing seems a grapple would be best. For picking rocks, maybe a thumb. I do get by with my mechanical thumb on rocks now. My vote considering my circumstances would be the grapple.

Pallet forks work pretty good for moving logs. The big advantage to a grapple is I can set the logs in my dump truck without hitting the truck as hard. The grapple is a useful tool don’t get me wrong. But I’ve had a fixed thumb on both my previous backhoes and the hydraulic thumb is way more useful than those.

I put a grapple on my forks.

I bought a "Thumb" from The Thumb - Add-on Grapple Attachments and had my buddy Steve ,who is a master welder, adapt it to the forks and he indeed added reinforcement.

The only drawbacks as I see it are the added weight and if you need to lift a tall load with the forks. But it looks like you could pull a few pins and remove the thumb? I am surprised fork grapples are not more common.
