What he said. MX mowers have been breaking output shafts and JD wont stand behind them. I would NOT fix it, or buy another JD MX series mower.
Buy a HD name brand, Bush Hog, Land Pride, Rhino, Woods

That's the cleanest stump jumper that I've ever seen!!!
With the shaft breaking with so little damage or wear on the rest of the mower, I wouldn't put any more money into it because I wouldn't trust it.

Could get a few bucks as scrap metal. And yeah, I have an MX6, so far it's held together. It seems like the gear boxes were either made in China or Spain, and I forget which one has the failures. Also seems to be associated with the date of manufacture. I'll use my MX6 until it breaks, then off to the scrap yard and replaced with anything but a JD.

Wouldn't be cheaper just to get a proper gearbox that could actually stand the use for it? Surplus Center and Agri Supply list a couple of gearboxes at a good price. There are also more sellers for this kind of stuff.

Why buy new?
All a rotary mowers is, is a simple gear box attached to some tin (metaphorically). You pay a whole lot for what that gear box attaches to.
(IMHO) Slap a gearbox that doesn't have the defect on what you already have and be done.
Then you have an implement that's more reliable than one you're waiting on to break so you can throw it away.
On the other hand, time (labor) is money....
On the other, other, hand it takes time to buy a new one too...

Sell it AS IS, someone will be willing to try and fix it. I read an ebay seller has output shafts for sale. But I have not checked, not a project I want.
Spain gear boxes were the first to break. JD switched to China gear boxes, but I have recently seen reports of them breaking too, but a lot more made in Spain are failing.

Because it’s easier to write the 6-7 thousand dollar check for a new one vrs fixing the broken one if you don’t know how. 
As for the old one , I’d sell “as is” , you may be surprised just how much and easy it sells. I’ve seen many broken cutters sell at silly prices.

So one owns a tractor but can't figure out how to remove 4 bolts to swap the mower gearbox? Doesn't take that much effort.
