So with some helpful input from folks here I managed to get the blades sharpened and back on the JD MX7........which took most of day before yesterday. Felt good about it too, no wobble and the test cut was good.

And then, today......about 2 hours into mowing fire breaks I somehow managed to SNAP the output shaft. Felt something and when I turned around to see what was up I see the whole stump jumper unit laying the the fire break.......and I am smelling 90 weight gear oil.

So now the question is.......what to do.......options?

How hard is it to replace that shaft into the gearbox?

Or is the right thing to do to sell the thing for parts and get a heavier duty unit?

was it a finish mower? did you see what caused the impact & shaft failure? maybe some pics.
good thoughts on the outcome

Not a close up but you can get the idea.

Not a finish mower.....a John Deere MX7 rated for 2".

A Doctor would say, Good Thing it was a clean break.

That's bad luck … I think it's deere part DE19034 Shaft and mating bevel gear. About $1300. I'd look for a whole new gear box before tearing into the gears.

This is what I was thinking.

Though when the wife saw me ride up with it held in the grapple she said: "You should by a new mower, something tougher." Which sounds like permission to me!

That doesn´t sound like permission, that sounds like a direct order :D

Agree w/hoss. There is probably significant damage to the gear box internals, maybe even a cracked case. You must of hit something pretty solid. A heavier mower may not fare any better unless you find the culprit. It could be quite a way back before it finally sheared off.

MX’s are famous for this if you google around a bit, very expensive mower to have this happen!
